    John Proctor Character Analysis

…When we first meet John Proctor halfway through Act One, we discover a man who has become the thing he hates most in the world: a hypocrite. He is caged by guilt. The emotional weight of the play rests on Proctor's quest to regain his lost self-image, his lost goodness. John Proctor: Husband of Elizabeth Proctor, he does not care for the voice of authority (of the church or court) and does not want to be involved with the witch-hunt. However, once his wife is accused of being a witch, he has no choice but to become involved. He had an affair with Abigail Williams, and this affair is what causes Abby to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft. In the end, he wants to confess to having had relations with the Devil, but his dignity leads him to hang as a man with honor.

Physically impressive, farmer in forties, does not like hypocrites, even tempered, powerful of body, calm easy going, not easily lead, makes people feel foolish when he looks at them. He is a sinner, not proud of his affair with abigail, non religious, connot forgive himself, respected and feared, is similar to giles,

does not want to hurt abigal, he says "oh elizabeth your justice would frezze beer?" loves his wife, afair finished seven months ago, hurt by elizabeths suspision, feels judged, confused by marrys cahnge, has a faulty understandy of young girls, has three children, does not believe in witches, he says "vengeance is walking in salem" " We are what we always were in Salem" he says But now little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kindom:

Wants to help friends, Is proud, wants to help wife, scared, confessed to having an affari with abigail to try to free wife, is ruined
