Got a favorite "tribute" album?
I just got the John Lennon tribute album: Working Class Hero ~ and it's wonderful.
Only other tribute album I have is Encomium (Led Zeppelin) ~ and it's great, too. Mostly... And I had two of Merle Haggard's ~ didn't like either of them.
Looking forward to some R&P recommendations.
Thanks!
Now *that* is something new, H.W. :-D
Hayseed Dixie ~ Hells Bells
Hey, sdmf! :-)
Those sound very interesting!
I'm gonna have banjo playing in my head for the rest of the day.... *Not* that there's anything wrong with that! lol
Hey Prof,
I wish I could find "How do you sleep?" by the Magnificent Bastards on YouTube... truly a stand-out.
I'm pretty fussy about "tribute" albums, too.... If I don't connect with them... I trade 'em in. (Actually, tho, that's true for me and *all* albums... my CD collection is always in flux.)
ooooh, vdt288~ I can't *wait* to work my way through those...
OK, Ryan T ~ I'll give it a chance! Thanks :-)
Thank you, Beatle Fanatic!
Talk about an all-star cast!!
Thanks, Sugaree ~ Dream Theater does that, too ~ performs whole albums by other bands at their concerts.
I hear ya, Mr. B... I blow right past that Sheryl Crow song... same with Hootie and the Blowfish.
But... then there's Never the Bride doing a *stellar* version of Going to California; and STP's Dancing Days... Those are the reasons I've kept Encomium.
Hello, Silver :-)
Thank you.

Sweet link, Sugar!!! I love that song.
LOL, Silver... that album cover doesn't make my top 20 either ;-D
Hi Clayton :-)
It's nice to see you back again, too!!
And just for the record.... I've had time this weekend to listen to my new CD a few times and it is hands down GREAT.

Hi Shades!
My favorite one BY FAR is "A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan".
It includes Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Ray Vaughan, BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, and Dr. John.
They each do a separate song and then they do a few songs together.
It's a fantastic album!
Here's some videos of their performance from that album:

Probably the best guitarists I've ever seen playing together on one stage.
Edit, Ryan T; Great White has always been THE BEST in covering Zeppelin songs!

I'm a big fan of the Dead Zeppelin tribute album, which is a heavy metal tribue of Led Zeppelin.
Pat Boone also had an entire album of Big Band covers of Metal songs, like Enter Sanmdan, Holy Diver, and Its a Long Way to the Top.

Hi Shades, I liked "Perfect as Cats: A Tribute To the Cure" nice cure tribute, eh...I think there has been more than one.
Here's Bat For Lashes doing the Cure's Forest - eering feeling lol

Tribute albums can fall flat on their faces. Like for instance on Iconium a Led Zeppelin cover Sheryl Crow doing "Dyer Maker" lol.
Nice question have a great day Shades.

Hey Shades!!!
I love Sponge's cover of "Isolation" on that. Sponge was pretty good, too bad they fizzled out after their second album.
I'm not too much for tribute discs, but a few that I enjoy are:
"Humanery Stew - A Tribute To Alice Cooper"
"Tribute To Judas Priest: Legends of Metal" Volumes 1 and 2
"Holy Dio - A Tribute To the Voice Of Metal : Ronnie-James Dio"
"The music remains the same" which is a power metal tribute to Led Zep.

Hi Shades,
You know, in theory I'm into the idea. I'm into the idea of artists celebrating the artists that inspire them and I'm not opposed to covers. In fact I think there is no better time to get into the business of releasing covers as for a tribute album (I am one who thinks an artist/band is kind of walking a fine line between a nice tribute and being tacky in putting a cover on one of their official albums, eps and rarities not included). Anyways. I'm into it, yet I've never found one that was anything beyond hit and miss at absolute best and usually they don't even make that designation. I suppose the best one that I can think of was the Pixies one (Death to the Pixies?). That one was on the nicer side of hit and miss, but still I was underwhelmed. I've consequently kind of lost interest because I've grown to expect disappointment, but like I said in theory I'm into it.
I haven't heard Working Class Hero though.
