Should 11 year old females get HPV shots at school?
I'm 11 and our school is giving the 6th graders 4 shots:
HPV Cervical Cancer
Meningitis
Chicken Pox
And hepatitis B.
Should I take the hpv shot or should I be older?

Yes, get it. You want to get it before there is any change of you having sex. Even genital contact without sex can transmit HPV.
Did you know that cervical cancer used to be the #1 killer of women???!!! It's still a top killer of women in areas where women don't get regular pap smears.
Getting regular pap smears can detect cervical cancer in the precancer stage, but it's not like there is some magic sure to stop you from developing cancer. The way they prevent cancer is by CUTTING OFF pieces of your cervix. This can lead to pregnancy and other complications. If the cells keep coming back, you will have no choice but to have a hysterectomy. Sure, you won't die of cervical cancer if you get regular screening, but it could majorly affect you life.
Men cannot get tested for HPV and condoms do not protect you. Vaccination is the ONLY way to protect yourself from the worst HPV strains.
Get it. 11 is the perfect age.

Yes! Take the shot! By the time you're 26, you'll no longer be able to get the HPV shot and the government will leave you twisting in the wind.
Take the danged shot!
And LOL LOL... those idiots up above thinks that HPV is caused by sex! Nope. There are FOUR kinds of HPVs. Only two are caused by sex. The other two aren't.
It's ALL four that this shot protects you from.
People, educate yourself before giving an 11 year old the wrong idea.
Honey, you can get HPV even if you never had sex. Even 11 year olds can get it. Why do you think they suggested the shots for girls from 10 years old to 26?

Sweety, they want you to take the HPV shot now because...
1) About half of all adolescents in America get HPV...
2) You probably don't have it now cuz your 11 and (hopefully) not yet sexually active, and...
3) Once you get HPV the shot is useless.
If you want to "wait" I'd say no later than 12.
Eh, on second thought just take it now.
If your parents freak out tell them that women are at increased risk for cervical cancer because sometimes HPV for some women can be harmless, sometimes HPV can be pre-cancerous lesions in other women that lead to cervical cancer.
It is all about health and wellness. I am so glad that you are thinking ahead about this stuff!
Yay!

You DO NOT need this HPV shot if you are NOT sexually active. You can show if you had the chickenpox vaccine from childhood shot records. Meningitis is an important one to get because you get this disease by sharing food utensils, drinking from the same glass or cup as someone else or even kissing. Hepatitis B shot is to protect you from someones bodily fluids such as blood or semen. But this is another shot that most people get as a child just like the chickenpox shot. These two shots DO NOT need to be repeated if you already got them. I would seriously think about that HPV shot. It doesn't protect against ALL HPV viruses. Talk this over with your parents BEFORE getting any shots.

Sure, why not! They are just vaccines which are preventions shots. They help protect against cerival cancer and other potentially harmful problems. I would have gotten mine sooner if I could but when the shots came out I was 17 or 18. I'm 20 now and I'm glad I got the shots. You'll feel a slight burning sensation when getting the shots and your arm may feel a little sore but I PROMISE it is not bad! You will be happy you did it :) Just make sure they give you a lolli pop and a sticker when it's over! ;)

the younger you are the better, but you will need to keep up with your shots and go in regularly for check ups and boosters. ask your mom and talk to your doctor. do some research on the computer. google it. =]
the hpv shot is a good one to have especailly when you are sexually active, your only 11 you shouldnt be active, but it is still good to check into.
Source(s): i am 18 almost 19. just got mine this year, august 25th. =] my obgyn said the younger you are when you recieve the shot the more effective it will be. - Anonymous1 decade ago
I had to have my HPV jab at 13, and it hurt like hell. The first two were ok, but when i had the third one it hurt a little bit when the needle went in, but then the side affects kicked in. I'd never felt so ill in my life! But thats just me, everyone reacts differently.
But i do think you should be older to have all those shots.

The person who said the HPV shot only works if you never had sex before is a idiot, that's not TRUE.
As for the shot, yeah you should be getting it.
Especially because that's the age that most lil kids start that whole "I'll show you mines if you show me yours thing".

The HPV shots only work if you haven't had sex yet, so yes, 11 would be a good age to have that done.

Do your parents have any say in this? I don't think any children should receive any immunizations without parental consent.
as far as your age, 11 is fine because they want to give you this shot before you become sexually active.
