Question about FLAC format?

A band was giving away a free digital download and they had an option for what file format you wanted, and one of them was FLAC. I know what it is, like uncompressed, higher quality, but it said only for experienced users. Anyone know why that would be?

Flac is a smaller file size without loss of quality but larger than mp3 and other compressed formats.

Not all computer players recognize this format although no cost need be entailed to find one.

Few external players will play CDs burned in this format so the files would need to be converted to wav (to play in all CD players, new or old) or mp3.

    That's BS.

FLAC is the Free Lossless Audio Codec. When a song is ripped in FLAC, you basically get an uncompressed note-for-note copy, yet smaller than your standard WAV file.

Nearly all the major audio players on PCs have the ability to play FLAC files. If you have an mp3 player, you might want to check out Rockbox. You may be able to install their firmware on your player and play all audio formats.

FLAC files are nearly always larger than compressed formats like mp3 and Ogg.

FLAC is an a lossless audio format -- because of the fact of this song is compressed with none loss in high quality... FLAC stands for loose Lossless Audio Codec. that's loose implementation of proprietary audio codecs which could charge programmers/agencies that opt to apply their format.
