No Angels: Umps complain of verbal abuse by Angels
BOSTON (AP)—Umpires working the series between the Red Sox and Angels at Fenway Park complained Thursday that Los Angeles coaches were “unprofessional and unbecoming” after two close calls went against them at the end of Wednesday night’s loss.
“Their deportment as we left the field, going through the Angels dugout, left a lot to be desired,” plate umpire Rick Reed told the Boston Herald on Thursday. “We filed a report after the game and I would think there will be a coach or two over there that would be regretting his actions today. I would think a coach or two will be regretting his actions.”
An attempt by The Associated Press to reach the umpires for comment before Thursday night’s game was unsuccessful. A Fenway Park security guard who knocked on the door of their changing room said they were unavailable because they were on a conference call with the commissioner’s office.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Major League Baseball was looking into it. Mike Port, baseball’s vice president for umpires, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
“The World Umpires Association conducts itself in a professional manner and we expect everyone in and around major league baseball to do the same,” union spokesman Lamell McMorris said. “We recognize that in the heat of competition folks get heated up and make mistakes. However, in this instance, we certainly look to Major League Baseball to address this matter in a manner that makes everything right.”
Angels spokesman Tim Mead said Thursday that the team has moved on.
“We’ve got a game to play tonight and that’s our focus,” he said.
The Angels were visibly angry in the ninth inning of Wednesday night’s 9-8 loss when two calls went against them in what turned out to be a winning rally by the Red Sox.
With two outs, the bases loaded and the Angels leading 8-7, pinch-hitter Nick Green(notes) quickly fell behind 0-2 to closer Brian Fuentes(notes) and offered at the third pitch. But first base umpire Jeff Kellogg ruled he did not go around, and Green stayed in the box.
Green then fouled off three pitches before taking three balls to walk in the tying run. The last was a knee-high fastball that had catcher Mike Napoli(notes) jumping out of his crouch in anticipation of a strikeout.
“What was the count at the end, 3-4 to Green?” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said sarcastically. “I thought we had him a couple of times. I was surprised. It’s a good umpiring crew and I think we really feel strongly they missed a couple times we had Green struck out. Unfortunately, that’s the focal point of the game and it didn’t go our way.”

Wow. Immediately after the game ended as they were on their way to their dressing, I can understand the umps thinking "those coaches are out of line". But once they had a chance to see the replay and see how bad the calls were, they should have the smarts to say "you know, the coaches have a point. Maybe we should lay low and let this one slide."
But instead, to take this approach...it's difficult to comprehend. When you are wrong, man up and admit it.

A bit surprising.. the angels coaches and the organization are better than that. I know the frustration and the anger especially when the angels face boston at fenway. This "rivalry yet not really" has been going on since Dave Henderson and Donnie Moore no? So yes there always seems to be this sort of intensity whenever we play Boston. However I would like to say that umps are people with tough jobs and if they got verbally abused they have a right to stick up for themselves. But they should understand that the coaches were just blowing off steam it was a very frustrating game. And heck don't they get hassled all the time anyway? Do i think he should have made that call? Well anyone with as much experience as Mr Reed should have made that call.. whatever its done and over with. Sheesh if this is all going on in a regular season game i can't wait till postseason......

What is telling about that story is that it happened at Fenway, not Angel Stadium. Usually the crowd gets behind the home team and the umpires are singled out for verbal abuse. Think of how out of line Scioscia and the Angel coaches had to be to have offended the umps in Boston.

When in the world are we going to hold umpires accountable? They are as bad as cops. When an umpire misses calls that were so damn obvious they should get some heat. I have seen two series' that really stick out in my mind. One was a Giants/Dodgers series in which all calls went for LA. The other was a Red Sox/A's series. These two series' changed my opinion on umpires. I used to think they make honest mistakes, however when an umpire calls three pitches that were down the middle (literally) balls and makes a call on a play at first when he was watching the play at second I begin to think something is up. How the hell do you make a call on a play that you have not seen?! Well, one does not have to make a call when his mind is already made up prior to the games. I question the legitimacy of umpires. Just wait. It will all come out just like it did in the NBA. These umpires are not making honest mistakes. They are purposely throwing games.

This has got to be the highlight of the year for how bad the umpires have been at times. They have missing calls right in front of them all year long. The umpires if they don't already need to realize this is September and for some teams these games do count.

It's a basic problem that is more prevalent these politically correct times, and I honestly thought that the umpires would be mature enough to deal with it -- the sense of entitlement. They're "entitled" not to be hassled. "I'm an umpire, I'm special." Whatever. People will have an opinion, and it won't always be yours, Rick Reed. You are in a position to be disagreed with every time you open your mouth, point a finger, or raise a thumb. You knew that when you took the job. Deal with it.

You know I'm not so into Sports, but I know enough that the job of "UMP" is supposed to hold some power, just like a line judge in Tennis, but yowwee can't somebody write over some rules books for officials?
Sure being sweet in a call maybe thought wrong might work but yikes the guys are playing for gazillions of bucks and think how long any sport game would be if every play and every call went on a instant replay. Yowee, we could be in a 9 inning game for two days.
maybe it outta be more like in romans days blood sport and the guys in black and whites can be like the christians who get eaten by the lions.
maybe i dont really get it and i know rules have to happen but fans not only want but expect stuff to make it worth a ticket price and some enjoying whatever it is.
if ya ask me they are prima dona god like over sensitive to the task security guards, no offense to that job person
if i watch a boxing thing somebody better get their hiney beatun and maybe the ref too?

"I would think a coach or two will be regretting his actions.”
That sounds like a child telling his brother "I'm telling dad, you're going to get in trouble"
Anyway, umps make bad calls all the time. They've done it against the Brewers and in the Brewers favor. They've done it against and for everyones team.
The Angels did not have a stellar game, it stinks to have it end like that but if you are blowing leads and leaving the bases loaded with no scoring runs, you're messing up. Don't blow saves, don't leave guys stranded and win the game.
People get mad, people blow off steam, people like to blame others...
I seriously don't care about the Umps, boo-hoo, right? The call was bad. I agree, but....
Eh, the whole thing seems like a kindergarten fight to me.

This story is ridiculous! They made more than one mistake in that game going the Red Sox way, of course your going to here it by the Angels coaching staff.

What a bunch of crybabies somebody needs a waaaaaaammmmmmmmbulance! How is it that they hold so much power that nobody can argue a bad call? sounds like someone can dish it out but can't handle it when it's thrown back at them. LOL
