Is KERS just a way to legally cheat those who aren't using it?

This is the 800 pound gorilla in the room. Been waiting all season for someone to ask this. Since none of you have chosen to take it on by asking the question, hopefully you'll rectify that with a lot of answers on this one!

My biggest problem with the KERS system and the way it's been implemented this season, is that you're dealing with two mechanically different animals. Running them head to head ALWAYS leaves the non-KERS car at a distinctly serious disadvantage - defensively or offensively.

I realise use is optional under current rules. So perhaps it ought be reflected in the myriad of F1 rules that either all competitors use it, or none do. I'm disgusted at the disparity between the haves and the have-nots! I just think it's unfair fair, competitively. What about you?

OK, so this has been a learning experience for me, too. You guys bring out some good points. All I kept seeing was Kimi's boost past Fisi at Spa, and being able to maintain the lead only thanks to the KERS onboard. I saw KERS protecting a lead which, without its 80 BHP boost, would have relegated its user to, at best, a 2nd place finish.

But I guess you're right. Overall, the numbers say the advantage isn't sufficient to the KERS cars to make better statistics. All I've been seeing is a case by case use versus non-KERS cars to get and maintain advantages which would not have been possible without the System and the little steering wheel button!

Regardless, I still say, "ALL OR NONE!"

    Emmmm, I don't know how to break this to you Cuz, so I'll be blunt (as usual) The have nots are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the championship! The have nots have won 11 of 13 races this year! so this year its far more productive to be a have not I'd say.

    I do agree that optional rules are fundamentally not a good idea, if KERS had been the great invention it was meant to be we could have seen every race dominated by KERS cars, however it was a route open to everyone, Ferrari, McLaren and Renault to an extent spent millions on this idea and have had very little return. In summary I think you've been on the funny ciggies again, but I'm glad your back, you silly bugger!

    It is cheating when you are not supposed to do it but you still do it. There is nothing unfair in current KERS rules and it is not entirely for the elites. A 10th of the development budget should do the trick or a group of teams could have collectively contributed to develop and share it.

    As a parallel, take another scenario. The mandatory usage of soft and hard compound tires at least once in every race. It is optional to select the order of usage, but does making it an option constitute unfairness?

    And I protest the usage of the uppercase "always", from what I see of this season, the KERS cars have been swept over this year, just two wins 13 races so far.

    When McLaren, Ferrari, BMW and Renault developed KERS cars, they didn't know that the double-decker diffuser is legal.FIA may want to make the season exciting and perhaps fairer by legalizing the double-decker diffuser. At the end, double-decker diffuser actually makes the car faster than KERS cars.

    KERS is actually a 30kg weigh burden to a car. Because of the installation of KERS,the body work of the car cannot be changed to fit with double-decker diffuser.

    Red Bull is the only team obey all the rules as they depend solely on the aerodynamic of the car.As a result, they were dominant only in a few races.

    I wonder if McLaren and Ferrari redesigned completely the car body to fit KERS and double-decker diffuser next year.These two teams have enough money to do so.

    Brawn GP cars don't have KERS and they're running 1-2 in points. I can't begin to explain why an 80hp burst for 6.6 seconds a lap in the KERS cars isn't allowing them to blow away every non-KERS-equipped car on the track, but for whatever reason it isn't.

    I'd have a lot bigger problem with some cars having KERS and others not if the KERS cars were winning every race and the non-KERS cars were losing to every race, but since that isn't the case I find KERS to be an interesting technical oddity in an ultra high-tech sport.

    formula one is a private company which does what it likes to attract advertisers nothing you read about it in the papers or on TV is the whole truth it is a con. Hasn't it ever occurred to you how unlikely it is that a team that beats everyone one year can't even win points the next, like brawn winning every race then not even being placed then winning again???????????????/

    I rather have a different address it. i think that some days the fish chew and a few days they do no longer.
