Should I follow my dreams or try to survive reality?

I'm a high school senior and i'm deciding what to do for college. My family's not that rich, and i want to help my parents out. On one hand I can try to be a pharmacist and make money. On the other, I can do film editing or music production which is a dream job. Both are highly competitive, but with the rise of media this past decade i don't know if i can make it in the film industry. I'm not really fond of math but i can do it as well as i can do science. I just need some help guys. Please answer.

What about a double major at a liberal arts university?

Major in something like chemistry or biochemistry as well as majoring in multimedia (or film production or whatever).

You'll probably need to make some connections in order to get your foot in the door for a career in the film/music industry. So, you should make friends with your professors...and hope that they know people in the business. It's not the most secure way to land jobs.

The pharmacy programs aren't nearly as competitive as jobs in the film or music industry, and you're right pharmacists can end up making a lot of money. You should also realize that they need a lot of education, and know math and science very well (believe me...lots of counting).

In my opinion, you should pursue fields that you are most enthused about. To settle for something else get really old, really fast. Remember, you are make a choice that could last you through an entire career of 30-40 years. It is not a decision to be taken lightly.

Also, consider that as you go through the first two years of college you will likely become aware of many opportunities that you may not be aware of currently.

So, don't throw all of your eggs in one basket yet. Live and learn for a year or two and form a more informed opinion.

I would say for practical reasons (and if you don't have a strong preference for either pharmacy or music production), you should study pharmacy if you want a good salary.

But after you've helped your family enough you should pursue your own dreams.

I always say follow your dreams or you will regret it later.

It's better off to do something that you love.

Do what you love, just make sure that what you decide on, you commit to, that's very important.
