Is it appropriate to give a gift in this situation?

I just got a great new job. The interview process took 2 months and 5 interviews. The person who first interviewed me (property manager of several buildings) was very supportive through the whole process. I think he had a lot to do with my getting the job. I would like to give him a small thank you gift. Is this appropriate? I don't want him to think I like him. (I am married; he is not.) What kind of a gift would be appropriate? I was thinking of wine? candy? Help. Thanks!

As you can see from the majority of responses... a simple "Thank you for all the support you've shown me during this process" is sufficient.

    Have a polite day.

A gift is not appropriate as it may call his decision making into disrepute by other "know it all" people. But I would say thank you to him for his support and help

No gift, a simple thank you card will suffice.

I think a heartfelt thank you note would be sufficient and appropriate.

I don't think a gift would be appropriate. However, I think a thank you note would be appreciated, especially if he was really helpful.
