Housing is an issue for many, many reasons: housing is very expensive, not all people can afford housing, even rent and still met all other needs like food, heat, car etc. this is because low income housing is very scarce and depending on where you live, there isn't enough government support for people who need help (in U.S) housing also is connected to the recent economic downturn (depression) banks and mortgage companies gave loans for houses that people just couldn't afford, this drove up the price of real estate and when the people started defaulting on loans, the economy began to have problems. Housing is also an issue that relates closely to wages. Wages have been stagnant (not going up) while the cost of everything else has gone up - food and housing being the most expensive of all. When people can't afford housing they end up costing the tax payers more - because they need more services or become more of a drain. Once you lose your housing you begin to lose everything else. Imagine trying to hang on to a job when you are homeless. We could also say housing is an environmental issue. We build bigger and bigger houses using more and more resources to do so and put them on large plots of land. This is a waste of environmental resources and allows the fewest people to live on the most land using the most resources rather than having the most people possible living and using the least amount of resources.
