    Any number to a negative power is equal to the inverse of that number to the positive power. So 3^-1 = (1/3)^1 = 1/3, 3^-2 = (1/3)^2 = (1/3)*(1/3) = 1/9.

    1/3+1/9 = 3/9 + 1/9 = 4/9

    3^-2=1/3^2=1/9

    3^-1=1/3

    1/9+1/3=4/9
