Parents and/or those with parents....?

Parents do you make your children pay rent? I'll be 18 in 2 months and my dad is talking about it. I really think its unreasonable I just started a job-i haven't been working much in the past 2yrs because of lots of health problems and my parents didn't even want me to look for a job. Now that I have one they want me to pay rent. What do you think about this? Do you do this to your children? How much do you charge them?

if they want to charge you rent, that means that you dont have the right to live with them any more. they should only charge if you are out of college and are able to get an appt or a house

  • You neglected to say if you were still in school. I'll give my answer anyways. If you were in school, your grades would be your rent until you were out of school, then, yes, I would charge you rent. My friends have a unique perspective on this, and I think I will follow suit with my son. If he wants to live at home while he is in college, he can for free, but only after living in a dorm for the first full year. This really teaches a person alot about their responsibilities, and their expectations of others (privacy, cleanliness, noise, chores, etc.). If I had a child at home that was not in school, I would charge the average for a one bedroom apartment in the area, and make them split the utilities. You can't go on living expecting that your parents will be there to support you. If you have extreme health issues, you might be able to get onto disability (if you live in the US) and if you did that, there are programs out there that will help you move out of your parents home, with subsidies to help cover things like rent and utilities. Trust me, the sense of freedom when you get used to living on your own is worth moving out!!! I think your dad is just trying to help you make that decision, he's not trying to be mean.
