Has my dog sprained his leg or is it something more serious?

My 9 month old rottweiler has been limping on his front right leg for over a week now. Initially we thought it was the small cut on his paw, but that has now almost heeled + hes still limping especially after his walk. This morning my oldest son moved the dogs leg slightly to the side + he let out a cry + now his limp has gotten worse. I am really worried its something to do with his joint but i wont find out until i go to my vet tomorrow. Can anyone please tell me if they've had a dog with a sprain or strain and what the symptoms where?

9 months to a year old is a critical time for all the hereditary stuff to appear and cause issue. But he may have also experienced a trauma injury that you did not witness.

The cut paw should not show such severe symptoms in a bouncy young dog.

Best thing will b to vet him as soon as possible. You will be able to explain to the vet the full history including the cut and then let the vet make you a possible clinical diagnosis. Walking badly for a long period of time at this age can also cause other issues.

It is going to be expensive to get a true diagnosis with this so hopefully you have some insurance for him.

If you do not have any insurance you must still take him somewhere. If you are in receipt of benefits you can use the PDSA.

It is now an offence in this country (UK) not to vet your dog if they are suffering.

I sincerely hope this is a sprain, but from experience of 9 month old rotties, it is the classic time for pano, OCD or ED to show up.

Pano is basically growing pains, and with very strict rest they will balance out and be none the worse for it.

OCD is when there is too much calcium build up caused through genetics, diet or exercise (they should never be overexercised, and at 9 months should still be on only about 3/4 hr per day). The calcium causes extra bone growth within the joint and can be elbow or shoulder. This requires an operation.

ED is elbow dysplacia is bad news, and although if caught early enough can be operated on, it is very expensive, and not always recommended. My boy had ED in both elbows but I managed his pain until I lost him at 9 1/2. So they can live with it, but suffer quite a bit.

Please let us know what the vet says.

If this lameness affects other legs, in turn, I'd suggest pano. He's the right age for the onset of this. It's very painful, but the good news is it can be helped with pain relief, and they do outgrow it. Otherwise there are any number of other bone/joint-related conditions, all of which need diagnosing by a vet. Until you see the vet, keep him quiet - I'd suggest crate rest, and only going out to relieve himself on the lead.

If it is pano (and suggest this to your vet because they don't all automatically think of this and go into HD, ED etc etc.) there is an hereditary connection, and his breeder should know about this.

sounds like maybe a trapped nerve or soemthing similar!

take him to a vet just to be safe!

    heres some tips before then

Hot and cold the shoulder joint(this means use hot water this can be acheived using 2 towel one soaked in hot and one in cold!) hold the hot on the leg for 30 second(as hot as he can tolarate without buring him) then freezing for 30 second then do it again! reapeat again every 4 hours, and as soon as you get up!

keep him off the leg as much as possible

you can give dogs children asprin weight the dog and call the vet and ask whats th emax dose you can give!

you may notice an improvement very quickly on the leg but defianlty get him checked out!

I hope he gets well soon!

With a dog of 9 months old and no previous issues it sounds like a pulled muscle or a sprain......glad you are off to the vets as if it doesn't get better it will need anti inflammatories and rest.

Only the vet can tell you what is wrong . Till you take the dog tomorrow keep his exercise down keep him on a lead and don't let him get over excited so he doesn't cause more damage.

so the dog has been limping for a week and you havent done anything about it? smart.

it could be anything from a fracture, or elbow displaysia, or ligament issue, or pano, or ocd.

good thing you are going to the vet tomorrow. keep him confined til then.

A strain should heal quickly. Get an xray and if no breakage is discovered, suggest that it could be a pulled tendon.
