As big Pharma's power grows w/ our govt, cheerios can't say they lower cholesterol, what else can't we know?

I've seen a lot of legal references lateley to blueberries no longer being able to be marketed for antioxidant impacts, etc. Is government's slavishness to special interests not only shaping the 'reform' debate but preventing people from getting information about natural health remedies that don't make pharma rich?
Or does this idea that foods would have to sponsor 'fda approvals' to prove their claims - something only cost effective for drugs because of the 'patents' protected - merely coincidental in benefitting drug companies?
kaitoboato and supersized - I don't think people should be able to commit fraud but if they say 'nutritionists recommend' or 'studies have shown' with a footnote that no clinical testing has been done, and we are talking about some natural food like blueberries or wheat, they should not have to go through FDA testing designed to make sure foreign chemicals being proposed for human consumption are not poison. I have no problem with patents for those who do go through the testing and actually have advances (beyond placebo effect, a little problem they tend to have) but I don't think our government should be requiring we NOT be told about possible good health impacts mentioned in good faith, for us to look into ourselves.
kagmi the same protection of the drug industry is in HR 3200 it was a White House deal, google it or check out Huffington Post.

Hell I had to inform my doctor that Herbal Medicines helped me more than their conventional medicines. And I didn't suffer from side effects. You know the kind of side effects that are worse than the symptoms they prescribe for.
We're also not going to get to know that our meat has been cloned and placed in the supermarkets. FDA needs a good overhaul too if they think any of this is acceptable. And we don't have to worry about talking to our doctors about this pill or that pill as people have been dumping their unused prescriptions in our water and we all have been drinking the combinations of them.

We were told they were spraying for Gypsy Moths (1 if they caught it in their trap) and that 1 they considered an invasion. *laughing and eyes rolling* Then asked to call a number if anyone was having any adverse effects from the spray. I called because after their spraying I had nose bleeds for no reason. When I questioned them on chemical testing on humans, the advertisement for the number disappeared as did the call line.

The influence of the drug industry in politics is becoming shockingly clear recently. The most recent draft of the health care bill eliminates pretty much all competition against the drug industries, and tries to make up for this by increasing fees and requirements on the taxpayers. I see pretty much no way this could have happened except that a significant number of Congressmen (apparently Republicans, since these changes come with the first bipartisan version of the health care reform bill), have been bought off by Big Pharma.
There -is- a lot to be said for the necessity of a regulatory body to verify health claims. Some "alternative" or "natural" health treatments are genuinely poppycock, or even dangerous. However, I have to admit to some skepticism about the FDA's recent actions, like their refusal to approve electronic cigarettes which, in my mind, cannot possibly be MORE harmful than the normal kind.
I really hope we see a purge and/or restructuring of the FDA sometime in the next few years. I feel like that issue has to come up eventually if things continue as they are, and I'd really like to see some president make that his (or hers, I suppose) priority.

I never thought that I would defend Big Pharma, however, medications are created thanks in part to the fact that one day the investors will be able to make a profit. Let's use Viagra as an example. There is a market for creating a drug to help with erectile disfunction/frat boys having a good time. Someone had to fork out the cash for the creation of the drug based on the fact that one day they would get a return. The creator of viagra has a patent on the product for fifteen years, allowing them to sell the product for market value for 15 years so the people who forked out the original cash can get a return. If the free market did not work in medication creation, no one would create medications because no one would fund it. How dependent on the government do you want to be?

Yes, the more I read the more I'm realizing that the healthcare "crises" is really a corporate profits crises.
There are much cheaper ways to keep the population healthy and to treat common ailments. But the drug companies don't get paid if we use home remedies etc.
This is bad.
EDIT:
For instance if BIG PHARMA found out THC (active component in marijuana) helped chronically ill patients with pain and appetite, they could do one of two things: lobby to get marijuana legal so local farmers could grow it and produce it OR create a synthetic, get a patent and charge astronomical amounts. (All while the all natural competition remains illegal...)

The guy they caught was a member of one of the terrorist groups that the DHS has identified. I know this because I am a member of the same organization. Yes, he had the cash, but no bombs strapped to his body. Yes, he had been to a meeting for this group. And last but not least, yes, he is in opposition to this illegal government and the tyranny they are forcing upon the free people of these United States of America. It is time for all true Americans to become this type of criminal and fight the tyranny and corruption that has infiltrated our government on all levels. Find a grass roots group in your area and help us to take America back. Help us to save the Constitution before they totally destroy it. Help us to make this a land of liberty as our forefathers did for us. They offered their life's blood to give this nation a new breath of life with freedom and liberty. Are we going to let them take this away and force us into a socialist form of government? Not as long as I am alive and able, nor many others like me, who have taken the oath of allegiance to the Constitution and flag of the United States of America. OSTROWSKI: I pledge allegiance to the principles of the American Revolution, stated by Jefferson, and for which the Minute Men and Washington’s Army fought: that government’s only purpose is to protect our natural rights to life, liberty, and property; that any government that does ‘more’ than protect our natural rights must thereby violate those same rights and become a tyranny that the people have the right to alter or abolish. I pledge to resist that tyranny by peaceful means if at all possible

You're absolutely right. Pharmaceutical companies are trying to get everybody on pills instead of using natural remedies. Just look at all the commercials asking you to "talk to your doctor' about taking this or "ask your doctor" about that. It's disgusting. I think pills do more harm than good.

You are spot on. If we only taught doctors so many common sense cures for ailments like the common cures and ailment books, we would save literally trillions and our life expectancy would be about 90. That is the truth.
GREAT QUESTION, that got me fired up and ready to go....
