Does it annoy you when people talk to you about God as though they have proof he definitely exists?

I'm not saying he doesn't, but I'm not saying he does either. I really don't mean to offend ANYONE, I'm just asking a question.

When I was little I used to believe in God and all the rest of it, but as I've gotten older, I don't know what to believe anymore. I believe in SOMETHING. I'm not sure what, I'm just saying, I'm not someone who doesn't believe there's something bigger out there, because I do.

Basically I thought of this question after a lady where I'm working asked me, "Do you know about Jesus Christ?" Which I thought was a bit of an odd question because religious or not, who doesn't? (Or maybe some don't?) Anyway, I said yes, and she went on to say, "He's our lord and savior. He died for our sins" and whatever else, you know how that goes. I thought that was okay, even though I found it kind of strange she was telling me this when for all she knew, I might've had strong beliefs on God/Jesus NOT existing. I honestly thought she sounded kind of crazy. You can believe in this stuff but just the way she spoke about it as though she'd had conversations with Jesus or something kinda bugged me, lol. And more than that, the fact that she was sort of making it seem like *I* was the one who was wrong for not discovering God/Jesus or whatever.

Er, so she then says believing in him is the only way to get into heaven... and tbh I felt kind of annoyed at this point, but she was a really nice lady and I could tell she really believed in all this stuff 100% and maybe didn't realise that... well I don't know. Everyone doesn't have to believe in this stuff, for starters. And afterwards it occured to me; they say God loves everyone, that he'll forgive you for anything you do, blah blah blah, and yet she's telling me you only get into 'heaven' if you believe in Jesus? Yeah, I found that odd. But I guess that's another contradiction I've thought of too; the whole 'he forgives your sins' thing. Because from what I've seen, most (MOST, not all) religious folks are against things like homosexuality, and consider it a sin, which as I've said, I'd been led to think was forgivable (sins, that is), yet don't a lot of them claim you'll go to hell if you're gay? I know in the end it's probably just different people's beliefs. Just saying...

Anyway... I didn't mean to go on about this for so long. I just wanted to ask the NON-religious people; does it bother you when religious types talk to you about God like they know personally he exists, and in a way that implies they think YOU should share their beliefs?

I hope I didn't offend anyone. I think people can believe whatever they want, it's just in situations like this where religious people speak to you as if they know better than you... yeah, it's a bit annoying.

I don't have a problem with people who believe so strongly that God exists that they act that they don't need proof. After all, what's the point in *belief* if you need evidence? You can't doubt and have faith at the same time, requiring evidence negates it.

What *does* bothers me is the superior attitude I get when I make it clear that I don't share their beliefs. I've seen this in Christians especially, which is just backwards from what Christ teaches. It's particularly bad, because you would think that in order to persuade, you would win more flies with honey than vinegar, yeah? That kind of arrogance is just off putting, I hate people who think they're better than me and give me no reason for THAT.

Obviously, there are a lot of people out there, Christian and other, who AREN'T arrogant.

I'm a Christian and I'm sorry it annoys you! The lady you know spoke to you out of honest love and care for you.

I once believed the same as you, I believed in God, maybe, but not in the whole Jesus-is--the-only-way-to-heaven thing. I thought it was an arrogant thing to say, because God forgives everyone, just as you believe.

I have to say that things did change for me, I was invited to a baptism service for a friend and I went to support her, although I didn't believe in Jesus as saviour. Then all these other people starting talking about their relationship with Jesus, as if they really thought they knew him, and for the first time I felt that I was hearing something amazing. I was unaware that God was waking me up inside, but something spiritual definitely started. By the end of the service, I had felt the powerful presence of God for myself and became a Christian.

When someone tells you that they know Jesus personally, you should listen, because I now know it's not a lie or a delusion.

I did an alpha course after my revelation, why don't you give it a go? It costs nothing, and you can ask any question. You don't have to became a Christian and nobody will laugh at you or judge you.

Well youre making Christians look ignorant. You are aware that many of the things written in the Old Testament are fiction, stories told to explain things (Adam and Eve). This is becuase the Old Testament is based on Judaism. If you want proof that God exists, look in the New Testament, or even better, in those around you. I see God in Athiests (poor misguided souls), Christian, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, everyone. The only real proof that we believers have that God exists is in the ability to see Gods image in every person. So, the next time youre looking for this amazing "proof" that God exists, look inside yourself and look into the eyes of someone else. Thats where you'll find God.

Not really, no. It's easier for the purposes of conversation to speak as though the existence or non-existence of any given deity can be proven.

I don't believe that any deities exist, but I'm not absolutely proven right... just 99.999% sure. Still, instead of saying that, I just speak like I'm 100% sure no gods exist because there is practically no difference.

So if I'm talking with a religious person who is 99.999% sure they're right (for whatever reason), it doesn't really bother me to hear them say that they believe they're absolutely sure. It's a matter of semantics.

That said, if people go on and on about their beliefs and get in my face about it, and if in the process they fly in the face of things that HAVE been proven one way or another, that does annoy me.

no ....god wants us to have the choice of what we choose as our fate and actually in Manny religions it tells you to let others choose for them self...why would you be annoyed if some speaks their mind about their beliefs? the problem is when people push it on you and judge you based on what you believe and tell you you are wrong.

If someone spoke in the same way to you about science theories would you feel the same way?..

Would it annoy you or would you think they knew something you may not know?..

Would you give them the benefit of the doubt and realise they're giving you information you may not already have?..

No one likes to have religion shoved down their throat; it just turns people away. Normally when someone talks to me about God, I inform them that I don't much enjoy fairy tales.
