[ Q ] Which Major League Baseball player would you give the Speedy Gonzales Award (top/best base stealer) to?

Base stealers haven't got enough attention in the baseball section of Y/A. I would like to hear your opinion on who's the fastest OR the best base stealer in MLB this season?

Obviously, I'm going with Jacoby Ellsbury. Most steals in the majors, and he stole home

Although Jacoby Ellsbury has more steals this year, I think Carl Crawford has proven over his 8 years that he is among the fastest if not the fastest player in the major leagues.

First of all, you know triples are all about speed. Well, Carl Crawford led the league in triples in 2004, 2005 and 2006 while leading 4 times in stolen bases. In fact, for his 8 seasons with, for the most part, a below average club, he's averaged 55 steals and 14 triples per season. Who else can you find that can do that?

And also, when Crawford gets on, I think he has the ability to get in a pitcher's head a bit more because he's always jumping around and draws quite a few more throws than Ellsbury does when he gets on.

But also, you have to give credit to Juan Pierre who has never had below 40 steals in a full season and topped out at 65 in 2003. And last year, as basically a utility player for the Dodgers, he somehow got to 40 steals. This year, he's only got 27 but what can I say. Juan Pierre is pretty damn fast.

I would advise you to change your plans. Think about the temptations that ballplayers face on the road. Do you really want to marry a man who will be away from you half the year and probably having room keys thrown at him a lot during that time?? I used to think like you, then I started thinking about the reality of the situation. Guys stray very easily, especially when temptations are everywhere and so easy. If you want a faithful man, I'd suggest not picking one that will be such a risk.

  • In the here and now, the Speedy Gonzales Award goes to Jacoby Ellsbury. He's fast, yet patient. Knows when to steal and gets it done. He definitely gets my vote for 2009. That would be a pretty cool award actually.

Carl Crawford. He's consistently been among the top base stealers throughout his career. Players like Michael Bourn and Jacoby Ellsbury are fast, but they still need a few years before they can prove they are on par with Crawford.

How about Rajai Davis? He has 200 less AB than Ellsbury and Crawford, and about only 20 less SB.

If I did the math correctly he averages 1 SB per 8 at bats, so if you give him 200 more ABs he would have 25 more SBs, which is about 65 total SB, which would lead the league.

Also, higher OBP I might add

  • Jacoby Ellsbury! he's leading the MLB in Stolen Bases, he deserves the award!

Ellsbury deserves it, most steals and not caught very often.

Honorable mention: Chase Utley, 22 in 22 attempts, and Yadier Molina, who unbelievably has 9 steals this year.
