What does it mean when my light fixture continually fades to black and turns itself back on?

Basically that's what happens. I turn on the light, it's on, it fades to black, turns on again suddenly, and repeats.

I've been told that it's a ghost. I'm rather hesitant to believe that, for obvious reasons, so...any power- or lightbulb-related ideas?

if it is a fluorescent tube or a low energy bulb and you can see blackening at the ends when it is switched off it means it is just about worn out and needs replacing, older style fluorescent tube fittings also have a starter capacitor that sometimes needs replacing. If how ever this is a incandescent/ tungsten filamented bulb there is a wiring fault of some sort, if it is fitted to a dimmer switch that would be my prime suspect, either way on this type of bulb switch it off and don't use it again until you've had the wiring checked out by a Professional electrician

Try changing light bulbs to see if it still does it. If not the light bulb, could be wiring of the lamp. Try plugging the lamp into another socket in another room. If still does it, then it's the wiring of the lamp. Slowly, by trying different things, you can, by the process of elimination, you can get closer to the root cause of your electrical problem. If it's the wiring in the wall, be sure to get an electrician to fix or at least shut off the power for that area at the power panel. Good luck.

light bulbs make contact @ two points the screw shell and the center tab of the socket. It is normal to screw the light bulb in at tight as you can. when you do this you push the tab further into the socket. It gets screwed in so far it makes poor contact, short lamp life, With the power off pull the center tab up so it will make better contact with the lamp.

There is a bad connection on the wiring, or there is an appliance that is absorbing most of the power if that is the case U need to run a dedicated circuit to the appliance

short circuit. maybe its a bad bulb or maybe it's bad wiring,if the fade coordinates with the start up of a fridge or a/c or water heater or well pump you have an overload.buy a electric meter and monitor the plug for voltage loss.OR have an exorcism performed on your fuse box.

    Are they low voltage downlights?

If they are, it could mean the transformer is getting too hot. Clear away insulation from the transformer and globe. And try to keep the transformer away from the globe, as far as you possibly can.
