Writing Driver's License Number on Laptop a Smart Thing to Do?

Not long ago CNN had a short segment about how it's smart to write your driver's license number all over your laptop. I was wondering if that was such a smart thing to do these days with so much identify theft.

I'm aware of the many various security devices, stickers and retrieval software for laptops if they're stolen, but I'm curious if any of you write your driver's license number on your laptop?

If you do, is there any special type of marking pen you recommend?

I thought to use again either ArmorTag or YouGetItBack sticker services. That seems safer than telling a thieve your driver's license number.

Thanks!

It probably isn't too much of a safety concern because you don't use your driver license number for hardly anything. It's not on your bank accounts or credit cards so it shouldn't be a problem. The only way it would be of any use to a thief is if they work at the DMV :D

I would use a sticker or just plain Sharpie. The best place is probably on the inside of one of the panels on the bottom, that way it's not obvious and a thief won't think to cover it up or scratch it off. Then when it's recovered you will know where you wrote the number inside the panel and can prove it's yours.

    Hope that helps!

I did not see the segment on CNN, but I don't think you got it right. What good would it do to write your driver's license number all over your lap top with a pen or a Sharpe. As far as the Tag service I looked at it, sure if your computer is lost, then you would get it back but if it was stolen, they would just take the tab off.

No I think what the CNN segment said was to engrave you drivers license number all over your laptop. Even if they take off the number you can still recover it. They almost always don't go deep enough when trying to remove something that's been written with a engraving tool..

So why use you drivers license, why not use your name and address. That would work if your laptop was lost, and would also be good enough for the police.

All these ideas would likely deter a thief from possibly stealing your laptop, but all the writing and numbers on the laptop case sure as hell would keep me from wanting to buy a used laptop with all this scribbling on it! But then again, when the computer is in for repair or sold, anyone would have your driver's license number or telephone number to use in anyway they saw fit.

if you want to make it evident use a diamond cutter and carve your number onto the case next to the serial number.

your driver's license number is the least most pertinent information you should have to protect from identity thieves.
