How does the CA Department of Corrections determine which CA State Prison an inmate will serve time in?

I'm sisters boyfriend was recently convicted of a felony and will be serving a few years in CA State Prison. We have not yet heard which prison he will be sent to and I'm wondering how this is determined. Where the closest prison is to him now? Current prison population? Severity of crime? His crimes were committed in San Diego County and he is currently at a San Diego County Jail awaiting transfer. Does anyone actually know how this is determined? Donivan State Prison is the closest prison to where he is currently located. Any links with more information would be helpful as well. Thanks guys!

I can't find the right place on the California Department of Correction's page but I am sure it is very typical across states: Here is the paragraph explaining it from the Indiana Department of Correction:

Male offenders are assessed at the Reception Diagnostic Center and females are assessed at the Rockville Correctional Facility Intake Unit. Each offender is scored on the Classification Designation Instrument. Points are assessed according to length of sentence, seriousness of the offense, violence in the offense, escape histories, substance abuse problems, conduct while incarcerated, etc. At that point, the score is calculated (minimum, medium and maximum). The score is then measured against security level criteria. Certain criteria prohibit offenders from placement in lower security settings, such as remaining time of incarceration, pending charges, sex offenses and serious conduct reports.

I could check out with each. I recognise with CHP ordinarily if you're sincere...they wont preserve it in opposition to you...there would possibly must be a special period of time that has handed due to the fact the incident
