Do NBA coaches with great teams get overlooked for awards?

It seems like that the coach of the year award goes to the coach of a team that was terrible the previous season and then improved significantly to either make the playoffs or just miss. Nothing wrong with that (using that logic, I hope Kurt Rambis is COY!) But by doing that, guys like Phil Jackson and Greg Popovich seem to get overlooked when they have jobs that are just as difficult. Not just COY, but probably the best battle worn coach would have been Jackson during the Shaq-Kobe years just to keep them playing nice together. Popovich takes players that others don't want or don't know how to use (Ginobli, Bowen, etc) and makes them a championship contender every year. Why do these guys get taken for granted?

Mike Brown got it last year and he didn't even run the offense. His assistant coach John Kuester ran all of the offensive sets.

So really Mike Brown got COY for doing 50% of the X's and O's. I'm sure he did more behind the scenes of course, but on the court he didn't handle any of the offense.

Yet Jerry Sloan has never won COY? He's good enough to be inshrined into the Hall of Fame, but can't get a COY award?

    That makes no sense whatsoever.

Jackson's last COY award was in 95-96. It's also his only COY award to go with 10 championships.

Yes they do, but I believe that since this award is given out before the playoffs and the playoffs don't count then it is ok that it is given to lesser guys. If the award included the playoffs than those brillant minds of Popovich, Jackson, Adelman and others have to play into the equation. If they weren't overlooked then they would have the awards every year. It is all about doing what you can with the talent you have.

Look at Rick Adelman this year who got the Rockets to play great ball despite another injury hit season, For what he had compared to what Phil Jackson had, you tell me who did a better coaching job. I would say hands down Adelman. The talent bailed the Lakers out in that series and the lacked of scoring the Rockets had killed them, but Jackson was outcoached. I always say everything is an equation and all variables must be studied.

Very true indeed; it's as if they look at it this way like, a coach no longer has to coach at a high level just because he has talent. When on many occasions; it's the coach who utilizes that talent correctly and better then the next coach. How many players of the course of NBA History have there been who have performed well for one team; but no so much for another team? When Rodman came over to the Bulls, the way Phil worked with him, changed his career for the better. He understood Rodman (as much as about anyone could try.) and utilized him correctly.

But like you said, a lot of times, if not most; the award goes to a Coach who 'turned around' a team. Coaching's not always about "turning things around." A lot of times it's about holding true to your system, making the proper adjustments, and coming through in key situations.

The current "Coach Of The Year" Mike Brown, was having his assistant draw up the plays in the crunch time in the Orlando series while he frantically paced the side lines. And his new Center called the opposing coach, "Stan Van Panic." Sure looks like the shoe is on the other foot now.

NO, Mike Brown of the Cavs Got it last season his team was pretty damn good After getting Eliminate in semi in 2008 playoffs, IN My opinion I think getting the COY have to be surprise teams. You don't have to have the best Record in the League, it's how your team improves.

    YES!

    Byron Scott

    Mike Brown

The two best examples. Byron Scott won Coach of the Year after he and the Hornets went like 56-26 after they went what ? 33-49 ?

Mike Brown. He won the coach of the year after he and the Cavs got 66-16. The year before, he they got I think 45-37...

    Great point/post.
