Language culture in France?

I'm going to France for 2 weeks and I understand some French but mostly when it's written. (The spoken language moves a little too fast for me). How much effort should I put in trying to put together a sentence with my broken language skills? Is it rude to ask someone if they speak English right away?

    it's note rude to ask people if they speak english (moreover for the younger) but at least try to say something in french before

    notice that most of the older generations speak no english at all

    make easy sentences (subject+verb+something)

    ask people not to talk too quickly (pouvez-vous parler lentement)

    then enjoy your trip
