What is TSP cleaner used for? Is it safe for finished hardwood floors with terrible smoke smell ?
Can TSP cleaner be used to get smoke smell out of a deck , sidewalk, driveway, grass and a brick fireplace. What about wood cabinets? The house I just purchased smells of nicotine in the hardwood floors and there is soot and paint on it.

Soot and nicotine are difficult to get rid of. You should clean all surfaces as best as you can. I'd recommend Kilz primer to seal all painted surfaces (Walls, ceilings, and trim). All other surfaces must be cleaned extremely well. Carpet will just have to be replace as will its padding. Even then the floor may still need to be painted with kills before any new carpet can be installed. Hardwood floors will adsorb the odor. You may have to sand and refinish them. I've been called in to many homes with sever soot and nicotine problems. They are never easy to fix. The ceiling in one home was yellow/orange from the nicotine. It took two coats of kilz and two coats of paint. no one can tell it ever had a problem (My in laws home).

I work for a company that sells TSP (the powder kind). The TSP should help cut down on that smell but unfortunately it will not completely eliminate it. If you use the liquid TSP is often deglosses surfaces like cabinets so be careful.
Keep in mind that products like White Pigmented Shellac Primers and Oil Based Primers will do the trick on anything that you are painting.
If there is paint and soot on the hardwood floors try to clean them. Unfortunately if they are extremely bad, your best bet is to refinish them (atleast put a new coat of floor polyurthane down). To do that, you will need to sand the floor lightly. Then you will need to tack cloth it/ clean up the dust. If the floor is dull then you can put another coat of floor polyurthane down per the instructions. I know there are a lot of new waterbased polys out there but try to get an oil. It takes longer to dry but it will seal out that smell much better. Re coating cabinets this way with a fresh coat of poly will also help (if cleaning doesn't do the job).
Good luck. Smoke is the worst smell to get out!! If you get stuck, find a local sherwin williams with a very knowledgeable staff. They might be able to help you through all your projects. That's what they are there for (regardless of whether you buy the products)!

Wood smoke impregnated into wooden cabinets, that are bare on the inside won't go away. Fire resto companies use "Kiltz" paint to kill smoke odour. TSP shouldn't hurt good finished wood it's just basically super laundry detergent. If you have soot and paint on the hardwood floors, the only cure is a refinish. But I have 1 question, with your great alarm for smoke smell, why did you purchase the home?

TSP is used to clean grease off areas before they're painted... not recommended for hardwood floors.
You could get an ionic air freshener or circulator and this will help remove the smell indoors. Time will take care of the areas out of doors if you make sure to pick up all the butts, etc.
Soot can be cleaned off bricks with a large eraser, I believe.

My Goodness, those former home owners must have been VERY heavy smokers for your deck, sidewalk, driveway and grass to smell like nicotine. Wow. I'd spray all those outdoor things (except the grass, of course) with a solution of water and bleach.
As for inside, I would sand down the cabinets and floors and refinish them. Go to www.naturalhandyman.com and you will learn what to and what not to use TSP cleaner on.
AFTER THOUGHT: Once the thing-a-ma-jig on the top of our chimney got stuck facing the wind and blew a day's worth of smoke from our woodstove into the house. I called our volunteer fire department and they came and sprayed this sweet smelling stuff in the house. We had to evacuate for a few hours. When we got home, I was amazed that the house did not have one single trace of smoke smell.

I was told to use TSP solution to get the grease and gunk out of my pool filter. Does that sound like a good idea? Is it safe to do that?

grease, grime, soot, smoke, mildew, etc. Good stuff.
