Definitely a bad idea. I've heard horror stories about people getting cartilage pierced with a gun. I've also heard that guns shatter cartilage, not to mention that they're supposed to be really unsanitary.
The thing about industrials is that they do the top hole, then they just keep going and do the bottom one. Yeah, the needle going through the cartilage hurts, but the thing that hurts for most people is the needle sliding through the fresh piercing at the top of your ear, while it's piercing the lower hole.
On a scale from 1 to 10, my industrial was about a 7, but it was a fleeting pain. It only lasted until the jewelry was in. But the pain was totally worth it. I would do it again.
My advice is to go to a piercing parlor that uses needles and ask them about it. Your existing piercing may not even be at the right angle to make an industrial piercing work. In that case you could put the industrial piercing on the other ear, if you wanted. :D
Good luck.
