Cannot read Maxtor external hard drive..?
I recently bought a USB 2.0 Maxtor external hard drive (640 gb), however my computer cannot read it. I've tried plugging it into three different ports, and it still won't read. I've also tried to format it but when I enter into disk management my external hard drive doesn't show up.
At this point I'm lost and don't know what to do..please help??

This is normal behavior. The raw storage capacity of the drive is 500GB, but in order to store stuff on it you need to partition it and format it into block sizes, which steals away some of the raw capacity. I liken it to cutting a pie with a knife. When you're done, most of the pie is still there, but a tiny bit is now on the knife. I know that's a crude analogy, but it helps me. Also, like Brick said, there's the issue of how to calculate the size; computers us 1024 Bytes to the KByte, but manufacturers use 1000, which, when into Megabytes and Gigabytes, is a significant amount.
