what is the difference between a DVD-RW and a DVD+RW disc?

I have just purchased a panasonic DMR-EX75 DVD recorder and it takes both discs. I am confused as to the difference between the two and wonder which is better to purchase.

+ are historically used a lot more in video devices (if you for example downloaded the latest episode of TV show, burned it to DVD and wanted to play it on your DVD player that supports Xvid/AVI.)

    - seem often cheaper and used historically more for cheap data storage to be read from a PC.

This has been blurred a lot as people often play/stream stuff from the PC to a HD TV.
