Hi
Astras are fitted with electric power steering pumps and they are powered by the alternator. Faulty alternator equals faulty power steering.
Does the battery light ever come on or flicker? Is there any noise or a smell of burning from the engine bay?
My advice before you condemn anything else is to have the charging system checked out.
Very best regards

best thing get your alternator charging checked whether its charging ,
only when power steerings not working then
also check the fuse (i had one in the past where it had a light crack in the fuse )
if all checks out okay then its pump

If the belt tension is ok and fluid level is correct, you probably need a new pump.

Check the drive belt tension, it may be slipping... Is there a drive belt present? It may have broken.
