Actually you do add the $2 to make the total amount the 3 men paid originally. The trick happens where the 3 men would of payed $8.33' each, not just $8 (as $8.33 x 3 = $25 (rounding to nearest dollar) which is what the room is worth). So if each man recieves $1 back, they each payed $9.33', so by rounding to the dollar, the total the men paid is $9.33 x 3 = $28. Plus the $2 the bellboy has makes $30, which they originally paid.

you subtract the 2 bucks the bellboy kept not add the 2. making the total 25 which is what the hotel was worth. you have already subtracted the three they got back so subtracting the three then adding the two wont make any sense. Im so smart

Cos you need to consider the whole pound (so hard to explain). The first pound gets counted from 0 - 1.00. When counting each pound, most people tend to count from 1 - in turn ignoring the pound it takes get to one from zero......
