  • I have a background audio virus. What the hell is going on?

You know? Those viruses that make it so that audio plays on your computer even when all programs are closed, usually bad advertisements. They also play every regular time interval, then stop suddenly. Well anyway I got this especially annoying one, I have no idea what is going on. I think it's a really bad home movie of some sort. It starts with some guy breathing really heavily, then randomly praying the our father. Crickets are chirping in the background, and there are gun reloading and explosion sounds. The guy prays really annoyingly. Some guys are also talking while the guy prays and breathes like he's about to cry. His voice irritates me. Then someone else starts to talk about the bible and cops or something. I can stand stupid advertisements, but does anyone know what the hell this is supposed to be?

  • Do you think Humanity will ever go Extinct?

All forms of Life will cease to exist with The Heat Death of the Universe in approximately 100 Trillion years, but do you think humanity will go extinct before then? If so, how and when?

    My Opinion:

I personally believe we won't, that we will survive for as long as there are stars to orbit and hydrogen to fuse. Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but at this point in our human evolution I don't see any event save a calculated extermination that could wipe us out. Statistically speaking it is unlikely a mass extinction event will occur before humans colonize another planet, and according to many scientists such as stephen hawking once space colonization has occurred the probability of a species going extinct decreases exponentially. I do believe we will have colonized a good portion of the galaxy before the Sun goes Red Giant and the Earth is destroyed, and hey, maybe by that time we will have advanced to a Level III civilization with enough energy available to move Earth to a new star system! What do you think?

  • Does ∑ (a_n + b_n) = ∑ a_n + ∑ b_n if the series is divergent?

    I know ∑ (a_n + b_n) = ∑ a_n + ∑ b_n if ∑ a_n and ∑ b_n are convergent

    But is ∑ (a_n + b_n) = ∑ a_n + ∑ b_n if ∑ a_n and ∑ b_n are divergent?

    If ∑ (a_n + b_n) is divergent?

And does a convergent series and divergent series always sum up to a divergent one?

  • Is there a pattern Here?

    4, 6, 32, 60, 384, 840, 6144, 15120 ...

All I can come up with is:

    .....................4

    .....................6

    ................4*..8

    ................6*10

    ...........4*..8*12

    ...........6*10*14

    ......4*..8*12*16

    ......6*10*14*18

    ...

But how do I put that into a formula? And it also seems a bit strange, is there something simpler I am missing?

  • Can the Universe be infinite in all directions, yet still have been created in a Big Bang?

One of the biggest arguments against an infinite universe has been that it is expanding/started out as a point. That to have an infinite universe that is getting bigger is illogical and impossible. But, according to mathematics at least, and infinite;y sized object can grow, and that there are different "sizes" to infinity. After all, it is the space between the galaxies that is expanding.

  • Life, at its simplest?

    Life, at its simplest?

Is there anything other than these three requirements needed to call something living?

    1. A Reproducing Matrix, able to store Genetic Information

    2. A Metabolic Process, in order to gather and use Energy from its Surroundings

    3. A Form of Containment, separating the life-form from the Outside World

Likewise, are these the three basic requirements for all forms of life?

    1. Energy, in the form of Heat or Light

    2. A Liquid Solvent, in order to facilitate Chemical Reactions

    3. A Chain-Forming Element, in order to create the Complex Molecules that makeup the life-form.

Anything you would add or change? I'd like to maintain the reducibility of 3 please.

  • Do the Majority of Scientist Believe that the Universe Finite or Infinite?

"the presently most popular shape of the Universe found to fit observational data according to cosmologists is the infinite flat model" -Wikipedia

"We now know that the universe is flat with only a 0.5% margin of error. This suggests that the Universe is infinite in extent" -NASA, http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/

"The current theoretical belief (because it is predicted by the theory of cosmic inflation) is that the universe is flat, with exactly the amount of mass required to stop the expansion ... [Recent observations] imply that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. If so, this strongly suggests that the universe is geometrically 'flat'" -http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/ques...

"Right now, the most widely accepted model supports that of a flat universe." -Universe Today http://www.universetoday.com/37351/shape-of-the-un...

"it seems that the universe is probably flat." -Curious About Astronomy http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/question.php?numb...

HOWEVER many people here on Y!A seem to say otherwise.

"Virtually no scientists make that claim. If they did, they would probably be marginalised and not succeed in participating fully in the scientific community. Science often makes claims without rational justification because of the nature of thought. However, the Universe is generally accepted to be finite and i can't think of any evidence for it being infinite." -grayure, lvl 7 Y!A user

"most physicists and cosmologists consider the Universe to be finite, but unbounded, something like the surface of a sphere like the Earth." -Erica S, Top Contributer

"The academics I have worked and studied with have generally agreed that the Universe is actually finite. I can't think of any who believe it is infinite" -Red Rose, Top Contributer

"Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers 200 years ago proved that the universe cannot be infinite in either time or space. That this is not better known is just another sign of the poor education most people get" -Tham153, Top Contributer

"If this universe were infinite it couln't also be expanding. Think about it: in what could an infinite universe expand? What Space would it be continuously taking up? That of Infinity that contains it? It itself would be Infinity.

(As it is, this universe is finite but expanding, and the further back you go the more finite it was, and the further forward you go the less finite it gets, but it can never be infinite. That which contains it is infinite, for if even that be finite, another space would contain it in turn - and how can space be contained within another space - it can only be the same, one, Infinite Space)." -Shades of Bruno, Best Answer

"Astronomers believe that the universe is finite because of Olber's paradox which is basically this - If the universe is infinite, every line of sight should end in a star, and that means that the sky should be ablaze with star light. But it isn't. The sky is mostly dark." -S, Best Answer

"Well, ..., the Universe is finite. It began as a finite singularity with finite mass, energy, and size. When it expanded and cooled down it's potential energy level diminished. The universe, however, has remained finite in mass and energy to this day." -Dig Quikly, Top Contributer

This is the ONLY Top Contributer I found who disagrees

"Most recent indications point to an infinite flat universe." -Zaghawa

  • The Moon Contradiction?

Well I just watched a documentary about the moon, and a noticed quite the contradiction.

    1. The Moon stabilises our axis

    2. The Moon has slowed down the Earth's Rotation due to the tides

    3. As the Earth slows down, its axis becomes more and more unstable.

So the moon both stabilises and destabilises the earth's axis.

    uhhh ... what?

  • Why was it called the Apollo Program?

Apollo is the Greek God of the Sun

Artemis is the Greek God of the Moon

WHY WAS IT NOT CALLED THE ARTEMIS PROGRAM!!!

Here's what wikipedia has to say about it:

Dr. Silverstein recalls he chose the name after perusing a book of mythology at home one evening, early in 1960. He thought that the image of "Apollo riding his chariot across the Sun was appropriate to the grand scale of the proposed program."
