Why was it called the Apollo Program?

Apollo is the Greek God of the Sun

Artemis is the Greek God of the Moon

WHY WAS IT NOT CALLED THE ARTEMIS PROGRAM!!!

Here's what wikipedia has to say about it:

Dr. Silverstein recalls he chose the name after perusing a book of mythology at home one evening, early in 1960. He thought that the image of "Apollo riding his chariot across the Sun was appropriate to the grand scale of the proposed program."

Artemis is female. America in the 1960s was sexist.

Well, um, I think you just answered your own question there. And while Artemis was goddess of the moon, she was better known as goddess of hunting, which would give it a bit of militaristic tone. NASA worked very hard from the beginning to make it clear that it was not a military organization.

Apollo was primarily god of music and poetry, in addition to being the one the Greeks (and Romans) attributed to the sun. A much more peaceful symbol than Artemis.
