What are problems that Atheists caused for Religion?
Alright, I'm writing an intellectual paper about the need for tolerance between secular and religious groups. To show where we need tolerance, I need to show where it is needed: therefore arguments between the two parties.
The problems that religion cause the atheists get huge media attention, (for example the ban on human stem cell research negatively impacts everyone as seen by the atheists, but the ban is necessary as seen by many religious advocates) but the problems that the atheists cause to religions aren't widely reported.
I'm not looking for your opinion on the subject, I'm looking for actual problems that the Atheists caused directly. "They don't believe what I believe" does not quality as a valid problem, as much as you may not like it.
Please, no hateful comments. This paper is objective - I WILL NOT REPRESENT ONE SIDE MORE THAN THE OTHER. The need for Atheist tolerance is just as great as Religious tolerance, and visa versa.
Thank you in advanced.
Another important note: I am not speculating nor suggesting any harm done. I am looking for both sides of an argument, which requires (duh) both sides.
No points for mindless babble, by the way. A couple people are either repeating the same thing they post everywhere or are getting emotionally wrapped up in the subject and are ranting.
I'm not looking for your rant, I'm looking for your insight.
That said, thank you again for your help.

Many of us actively try to prevent Christians in America from getting special rights. For instance, we actively try to prevent teaching the bible in public schools, teaching Creationism in science class or other times when they want their religion to be given special treatment. If other religions don't get their religious text taught too, then why should Christians? They usually call 'victim' and pretend they were wronged, but most of the time we are just trying to get the same rights for everyone and remaining religiously neutral in areas of government and education.

It's not just christianity. All religions that have a semblance to a cult end up with extreme factions. Where members try and force their beliefs on others. Over the centuries religion has been the cause of genocide and an excuse for slavery. The thing with the cult type religions is that, good intentions and teachings are watered down with opinion of those preaching till theree are no clear cut rules. Today many christians believe that by asking for forgiveness and beleiveing in god, it is granted. The more traditional christians believe that the best people burn in a cleansing fire till all sin has gone then go to heaven, and sinners will still be punished. The majority of christians and those who follow cult type religions follow because they are scared of the consequences of not doing so. If there is an afterlife and you've spent a good life but rejected god you still go to hell. Those who fear that will follow god, or the idea of him. It doesn't necessarily mean they believe in him completely. It's those people who follow out of duty or fear rather than true faith who end up being not so great christians. Their whole heart isn't in it afterall.

Over the years the ACLU has brought several religious rights cases before the courts where there has been an atheist as plaintiff. This has produced a perception of the ACLU as being biased in favor of atheism. The following news item was announced on the ACLU website -- http://www.aclu.org/religion/index.html
"ACLU Asks Court to End Government Funding of Religion in Mississippi Abstinence-Only Program"
So in some ways these lawsuits could be seen as causing problems for the religious groups who are trying to promote a state sponsored religion...
(However the ACLU will defend anyone's rights - Even the Westborough Baptist Church which is disturbingly fair of them) -- http://friendlyatheist.com/2009/07/15/christian-gr...

We'll let's see now. When the athiests were burned at the stake they did not clean up their own ashes.
When athiests were condemned to hell, they refused to grovel and whine like most people.
When the athiests ask difficult questions they were thrown out of church and told not to return. Some of the good Christians hurt their backs.
The athiests pissed off George Bush and he had this to say about them; (United States, George H. W. Bush said, "I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic.)
The good Christian, Adolf Hitler did the same thing as George: Adolf Hitler banned freethought organizations and launched an “anti-godless” movement. In a 1933 speech he declared: “We have . . . undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few theoretical declarations: we have stamped it out.
Save God and Kill the Athiests.
What exactly do you imagine the Athiests have done to religion?
You may want to look at what Communists have done to religion. They did the same thing to religions that religions had been doing to them for years. I don't know if that was the right way to go about it but they managed to kill a whole lot of religious people.

Atheists tend to live their own lives. I have never heard of an atheist or group of atheists force their `non belief`on others, but I know of many instances of christians doing just that. Atheists point out the inconsistencies and contradictions of religion, which does cause problems for the believers. We also point out the injustice, atrocities and genocide of religion . Mary Daly in On Gynecology points out the atrocities that all the different religions have committed against women all over the world. (Clitonomy; foot binding; burning women on husbands funeral pyre; witch burnings)
As an Atheist, I believe that belief in god, goddess, allah or whatever your faith requires, is primitive. Religion contains little or no real knowledge, and without knowledge we cannot progress.

I think Religion is sort of falling apart on its own. Atheists just see it for what it is. If Atheists cause any problems its just in pointing out things learned from a variety of fields. Most of this collective knowledge is at odds with the God Hypothesis.
Astronomy shows the Universe began with the Big Bang
Biology proves evolution
Geology proves the age of the Earth
Archeology and Geology prove Noah's flood never happened
Medicine finds no soul
History shows religion to be a cause of suffering
Theology points out the flaws in each religion
Philosophy provides logic to disprove God existence
Comparative Religion shows that most religions think all the others are false
Social Sciences point out that religion does not lead to morality
The Bible contradicts itself, does not match reality, and describes a brutal selfish God who cannot be good and while doing the acts attributed to him
There is no branch of science that supports religion.
There is no version of History that supports Religion as anything but harmful to society.
There is no field of study that leads one to logically believe in God.

The very fact that they live in reality!!!
Science has shown atheists have a higher intelligence than people with a strong religious faith. The difference is 5.8 points according to findings in developmental psychology!!!
More members of the "intellectual elite" considered themselves atheists than the national average.
Only 7 percent of members of the American National Academy of Sciences believed in God. Whilst only 3.3 percent believed in God in the UK’s Royal Society.
Several Gallup poll studies of the general population have shown that those with higher IQ’s tend not to believe in God."
Without atheists the world could not move forward, disease would return to it's rampant form and civilization as we know it would collapse!!!
It is interesting that science has shown christians belief is in the reward need area area of the brain as drug and alcohol abusers whilst the atheists brains use the same area as people who refuse to indulge in the excesses!!

One problem that comes to mind is that they directly cause religious types to have to constantly modify there religion in order to not come off as completely foolish. The bigger problem is that they come off as completely foolish anyway. Being called out as a fool all the time seems to me like a bit of a problem...

the only "problem" we pose is that we are using logic and pointing out the flaws in religion
and as such many people are re-evaluating their beliefs and realising that perhaps their particular religion isn't the correct one, or that in fact none are correct and they are all man made.
in all developed countries, especially europe, uk and australia but also (to a lesser extent) the USA, atheism is the fastest rising "religion" (not that it is a religion) but you know what i mean.

I've heard that the scientific fact that the Earth is much older than 6000 years has turned many people away from religion.
