They would find a lactating woman and if they couldn't, they would use whatever milk they had. My grandmother told me that they used goat's milk and condensed canned milk because there was some dairy shortage during WW2.

there were wet nurses
and if the family couldn't afford to pay a wet nurse
they made home made formula .. usually carnation milk and a few other added ingredients .
They may of fed the baby cows milk , goats milk etc if other alternatives wernt available
thats why the infant death rate has dropped ..
researches know more about wat a infant can and cant digest , thats why store brought formula is way better now then is was 20 years ago ...

That also depends on what era you are talking about. If you only mean a hundred years ago or if you mean during the time of cavemen.
If the mother died and there were no other lactating females the poor thing would eventually die. Animal milk would be the only other option.
My father and all of his siblings were raised on a dairy farm in the 50's by their grandmother. She gave all of them unpasturized cow's milk and they were never harmed. In fact, we didn't even know it could be dangerous until recently. So, I guess whatever is lurking in the milk only hurts some children or it just occurs very rarely.

Wet nurses (lactating women, not the mother), cow's milk, water with sugar or honey mixed in. Lots did not survive infancy :(

wet nurses. usually this would be anyone in the village who had a baby of their own they were feeding. if this wasn't possible then goats milk is the next best choice.

No I actual have in no way tasted it, yet once you supply her formula then your milk furnish will basically go down much extra. you would be able to desire to get her to nurse as much as you are able to. do no longer supply her any bottles or pacifiers, because of the fact it reasons confusion and then they do no longer suck properly and your milk wont develop. solid success.
