Stress Strain relationship?

In general does every stress produce a strain? and vice versa every strain produce a stress?

If my strain tensor has a 0 element, does the corresponding stress tensor have a 0 in the same element location?

No .. you can have either pure stress or pure strain .. if I remember my mechanics right ...

" when a plane is acted upon by forces only normal to it, stress is either tensile or compressive ... "

"homogeneous deformation is pure strain .. "
