Actually, the shiny status is determined by the Pokemon's "personality value", and there is exactly a one in 8,192 chance of the personality values corresponding in a certain way to make the Pokemon different colored. Some people go through every single game and never encounter a shiny, while others play for an hour and get five. Some people "chain" Pokemon on the PokeRadar to find shinies, too. Shiny Pokemon are only found in G/S/C, R/S/E/FR/LG, and D/P. The shinies in G/S/C were determined by their stats (IVs), but in the later versions they changed it to the personality value system. Shinies are very valuable among Pokemon collectors such as myself, so if you encounter one I'd suggest you catch it.

The 1st and and gen. But being the older versions they are stuck in time. Makes me wonder if they did G/S/C justice with HG/SS.

The only games we have right now are D/P/Pl. HG/SS we wont see for at least another 6 months.
