Expect the unexpected?.... confusing?

if you expect the unexpected does that mean the expected becomes unexpected

or does tht mean you expect everything

but by calling it unexpected that means you aren't expecting it so...

does that mean you should just say

expect

and leave it at that

What do you think?

It means that you should expect something extra ordinary to happen. Now does extra ordinary mean that something is more ordinary than usual and thus quite mundane, or does it mean that it is unexpected and therefore not ordinary at all? You are completely correct in your thinking, because if you Expect, then the thing in question can not be UN-expected.

I always wondered about the term, "We are expecting a baby". I always wanted to comment, "Yes of course, as opposed to a Volkswagen" The proper thing to say would be, "We expect nothing other than a baby". This whole answer reminds me of a scene in Alice in Wonderland.

I think that phrase has a lot to do with pessimism. If someone told you to "expect the unexpected", then I'm pretty sure they don't mean "hope for the best". But I don't see how that phrase would apply to everyday life. If it did, then that would imply mild misanthropy. Notice I said "mild", because a full blown misanthropic individual expects problems with society. A mild misanthropic would be an individual who sees the glass "half empty".

it just means... expect things that don't typically happen...

people usually expect certain things, i.e outcomes of events, places and people..

if you're told to expect the unexpected, it means you should be on the lookout for the unusual outcome!

It just means be prepared to be adaptable if/when something unexpected happens.

Expect what you wouldn't expect to happen...

I think you're trying to be too literal.
