Spanish on the telephone?

As with ANY proper phone call, you should greet the answerer and identify yourself. There is nothing ruder than an unidentified caller simply asking "Is so-and-so there?" without so much as a hello.

After the answerer picks up the phone and says Hola or Bueno, respond with "buenos dias" (or buenas noches if it's night), "soy <state your name>", then "esta' Carol, por favor?"

Well, if you are calling a girl in Mexico and she happens to live with her family...Regardless of what type of relation you have with her I recommend that you ask for her this way:

"Hola. Habla (say your name), puedo hablar con Carol por favor??"

"Hi. It's (your name), can I speak with Carol please??"

You should do it this way because you are stating whom is calling and who you are calling for, And a please is just polite. You are calling someone elses home after all. Trust me latinos are way protective of their sisters, daughters, nieces and they tend to panic when a strange man person is calling for them. LOL. So it helps to demonstrate you have manners.
