We are told to eat 2500 calories a day. What evidence is this based on?
For the longest time I've been told that an average man's diet should consist of 2500 cals a day (2000 for women). This figure seems fairly ubiquitous, though I've been wondering what is the evidence it is based on? Only well referenced answers please.
I have the use of Pubmed and Medline, among other journal aggregating services, so please feel free to reference peer reviewed papers.
In the UK, we have labelling on soft drinks and snacks that shows how many nutrients the particular product contains. For example, it may say it contains 23% of sugars or whatever. It also states the average calorie intake of 2000 for women and 2500 for men. I understand this is average, but I want a recent study that can back up this statistic.

This might be for someone who is really active. 2500 calories is way too much for most people to eat healthily. I'm sure the ranges are more like 1600-2200 for someone that is not large or an athlete. If you want to live a long time you probably don't need to eat a lot. So in short I think its something someone made it up falsely a long time ago or its some kind of average.
