  • Does anyone know the music for the newest o2 mobile advert?

I can't give a description of the advert as I was nearly asleep, though I was just a solo piano playing.

    Thanks

  • Why is the production of goods (manufacture) so important?

My Dad runs a company that manufactures various products for the gardening industry. He's always saying that the U.K. government treats small-medium sized manufacturing businesses harshly and that this would eventually lead these companies to either go bust or take move production elsewhere (China, Eastern Europe, etc.). He's reticent about moving his business overseas because he believes that manufacturing is an incredibly important part of the economy. I'm not saying he's wrong, but I can't see why the U.K. would be worse off if say we were all employed in the service sector for instance. Does it have something to do with a trade imbalance?

  • Will doing weights help me to run better*?

I've just moved house to the middle of a busy city and am a good 15 minute bike ride away from the park I used to run around. To remedy this, I've joined the gym so I can use the treadmills. It's not ideal, but it being winter, I think it's a good way I can continue to train.

Of course, my membership allows me access to the weights. So what I want to know is will doing some kind of resistance training improve my running, and if so, what sort strength training would be best?

    Thanks.

*By better, I mean will it improve my best 10k time of 43.03?

  • How does Olanzapine work (Question for pharmacists, or other healthcare profesionals)?

I understand that Olanzapine is an antagonist at both dopamine D2 and 5-HT2 receptors (among others). Now, I can see why Olanzapine may reduce the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and related disorders as it acts to block dopamine at the receptor site, but I can't work out why introducing a 5-HT2 antagonist (as olanzapine is) would reduce the negative symptoms. Surely this would decrease serotonin transmission in the brain and increase the negative.

I note that aripiprazole is a 5-HT2 agonist and I can understand why it would reduce negative symptoms.

If someone could please explain Olanzapines mode of action, I'd be most grateful.

  • There is no psychology; there is only biography and autobiography (Thomas Szasz quote - meaning)?

As a student mental health nurse and former psychiatric 'patient', I have a great respect for the work Thomas Szasz. I came across this quote of his, and don't really understand its meaning. I'd make a guess at it, but I'd be interested to hear what others think it means first.

    Thanks.

  • In Snooker, is it a foul to pot two red balls in the same stroke?

I've been debating this with my Brother. I think it is a foul to pot two reds in a single shot. He disagrees. Can anyone clarify the rules. If you could source your information, it'd be most appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • Broadly speaking, the fitter you become, does your maximum heart rate increase, decrease, or stay the same?

I've just got a HR monitor. I worked out my Max HR is 197. As I continue to train (various high intensity cardio) will my max HR change? If so, what kind of change?

  • We are told to eat 2500 calories a day. What evidence is this based on?

For the longest time I've been told that an average man's diet should consist of 2500 cals a day (2000 for women). This figure seems fairly ubiquitous, though I've been wondering what is the evidence it is based on? Only well referenced answers please.

I have the use of Pubmed and Medline, among other journal aggregating services, so please feel free to reference peer reviewed papers.

I've noticed hacks use the terms interchangeably when talking about H1N1. Could someone clearly detail the difference between the terms?

  • What does stimulating and massaging the gums do?

I keep reading on the back of dental hygiene packages (e.g. interdental brushes), that these products stimulate and massage the gums. Is, and why is, this a good thing?

  • Does anyone know where I can purchase inert pills (placebo pills)?

I'm tapering of an antidepressant medication that in the past I've found to be very troublesome to come off. I thought I might try and harness the placebo effect and mix inert tablets in with the active ones. I'd hope that the 'theatrics' of taking a tablet (and not knowing if it was inert or not) would quell some of the withdrawal symptoms, hence why I ask if anybody knows where I may purchase some placebo pills.

    Thanks.

  • How does Aripiprazole (Abilify) work?

I'm a student psychiatric nurse in the UK and I've noticed that quite a few clients are treated with Aripiprazole if they haven't had success with the standard atypicals (Olanzapine, Risperidone, etc.). However, looking at the pharmocology of this drug, I can't understand why it would work for individuals suffering from psychosis.

As I understand it, both typical and atypical APs work as an antagonist at various dopamine receptor sites (specifically D2). However, Ariprprazole acts as a partial agonist of the D2 receptor.

Isn't an agonist a chemical that binds to a receptor site and acts like a naturally occuring chemical, in this case it would be dopamine. Surely then Ariprprazole would not lower psychotic symptoms, or does it work by mimicking dopamine but not having the result i.e. hallucination, delusions, etc..

I'm in my final year of nurse training and I keep seeing nurses abbreviate the word 'prescribed' as Px. I thought the correct abbreviation was Rx. Can some on clear this up for me please.
