Why is the production of goods (manufacture) so important?

My Dad runs a company that manufactures various products for the gardening industry. He's always saying that the U.K. government treats small-medium sized manufacturing businesses harshly and that this would eventually lead these companies to either go bust or take move production elsewhere (China, Eastern Europe, etc.). He's reticent about moving his business overseas because he believes that manufacturing is an incredibly important part of the economy. I'm not saying he's wrong, but I can't see why the U.K. would be worse off if say we were all employed in the service sector for instance. Does it have something to do with a trade imbalance?

It is easy to think that people would welcome a cheaper priced made in China item. Think each article bought from a foreign maker is causing a British family to risk losing its livelihood and income and thus maybe forced to claim benefits. We in Britain pride ourselves on quality workmanship but the general public have a lower per capita income to spend and is thus obliged to look for cheaper alternatives. It is a downward spiral that must be stabilised. This may mean keeping British jobs even if we have to lower wages Heaven forbi!d,!! but this is the fault of greedy bankers because they have made everyone feel so insecure about spending. So to get us out of trouble buy Made in Britain goods..They are better value in every way

sorry to tell you bro, but pops is right on this one. manufacturing is the backbone of the economy. building an economy on all services is akin to building your house on the sand. for purposes of domestic and international trade, it is clear to see why producing goods in the UK is more beneficial to the UK over producing them in China and then importing them back into the UK. there are jobs and real neighbours to think about. then there are all the secondary producers and those that have an input factor that goes into pop's business. the connectivity and feeders to homegrown production makes it more beneficial to the warehouse guy, the transport guy, the banks, the warfs, the inventory clerk ....
