Will doing weights help me to run better*?

I've just moved house to the middle of a busy city and am a good 15 minute bike ride away from the park I used to run around. To remedy this, I've joined the gym so I can use the treadmills. It's not ideal, but it being winter, I think it's a good way I can continue to train.

Of course, my membership allows me access to the weights. So what I want to know is will doing some kind of resistance training improve my running, and if so, what sort strength training would be best?

Thanks.

*By better, I mean will it improve my best 10k time of 43.03?

Weights can help. I would recommend strengthening your core. BUT instead of going for bulk, I would try for lean muscles. For example, instead of doing 3 sets of 3-5 repetitions of a heavier weight for yourself, do 3 sets of 10 repetitions of a weight that would get you tired on the last 3 repetitions of each set.

yes, lifting weights will help your running. It takes strength to run and lifting is one way to improve your strength. Distance runners don't need the mass of sprinters, but you still need strength.

Doing weights twice each week will help, and you should do a total body routine, not just your legs.
