Can Someone Answer My Borderline Personality Disorder Question?
It is said that individuals diagnosed with BPD have an unstable sense of self. What is meant by an unstable sense of self, and how does this manifest itself.
Keshia, that sounds more like instability of affect (a feature of BPD) as opposed to an unstable sense of self.

They go from thinking that they are the most amazing person in the world and feeling entitled to everything to extreme depression. Bipolar moods, only extremely frequent and influenced more by their surroundings. They are never wrong and arguing them is like arguing with a 5-year-old.

Lacking a true identity. I had a couple psychiatrists label me as borderline personality disorder because I cut my arms, and because I was abused and abandoned as a child. I find the diagnosis to be an insult. I don't have that many emotional problems, but I am very sensitive to criticism.
The problem with borderline personality disorder is that is cannot really be treated with drugs. Counseling is said to help, but many psychologist do not want to deal with someone with this disorder.
I've accepted the diagnosis of schizoaffective, and bipolar. The medications I'm on are for depression, anxiety and to help me sleep. I'm also prescribed an anti psychotic, I don't like to take it though. Sorry if I've rambled on about my other illnesses. It is important to note that most people with borderline personality disorder suffer from other mental illness as well.

most people have a sense of who they are....... they have a certain taste in clothing, music, decorating. They have favorite colors, foods, flowers....... things that they find funny or offending... things that make them happy or sad. All of these things make up someone's personality. Someone with BPD does not have a firm grasp on many of these things..... they aren't strong enough to commit to having say chinese as a favorite food so they take on the favorite of their friends...... They can;t form opinions because they don;t know how they feel abotu a subject so they might say one thing one day and something completely different the next day. They have no sense of self....... they do not know who they are.

Unstable sense of self can be manifested in several ways. It comes out for me sort of like I don't know where I "stand" - I'm wishy-washy. I'm too concerned with "outside" stimuli on how to be the "right" way, and of course there's so much conflicting outside stimuli of what the "right" way to be is, that the only solution is to be "myself" - however since I've never established that growing up, I run into problems. Another way it was described to me is for some people who are homosexual or have gender confusion issues. It's sort of another form of "finding yourself" in the midst of all these outside influences flying around. Someone who doesn't feel "right" in their own body.
