I am a Registered Nurse. The company who hired me deducted $22.00 from my first check to cover the fee for a?

background check which is required by law. Is this legal? I was shocked that they did not pick of the charge! I have NEVER been charged by any other employer.

    of course it is legal. they arent going to pay for something FOR you if they can help it. and they dont have to.

    Yes, It is legal for the company to request a background check before you start employment with them

    When they mentioned a background check did they specifiy that the cost of this would be deducted from your first pay check?

    Did you ask them who would foot the cost of this background check?

    Some companies will actually pay for the cost of this type of check.

    If this company specifically told you they would pay for this background check then, they have more of a morale obligation to pay for it out of their own pocket, and if they gave you any printed material specifiying they would pay out of the companies pocket then if i was you i would pursue them to reimburse you what they deducted out of your pay.

    But if you did not ask who was going to pay for this check or if they did not specify who was going to pay for this then i dont think that you would have much of a legal leg to stand on.

    You can thank previous persons. If you apply for a nursing license today, you will pay for a background check. That is part of the price of admission. You want to work under your " already issued " license? Then you will pay for the NCIC check. Stay unemployed or pay, your choice

    Ummm.... you are freaking over $22?

    I have had to provide a police check to my employers but I had to pay for it and go to the OPP office to get it myself.

    The issue is whether you were made aware that this expense was to be borne by you. Whatever the answer, it's inconsequential.

    With this said, practically you know that you need to let this go, keep your job, and keep the income flowing.
