Removing a Security tag?
My mum bought a scarf from Marks and Spencers last week. It was put in a bag and when she got home, dropped it in her room, but before she could look at it, had to rush off to see her sister in hospital. She's only just got round to looking at it now and we've noticed the security tag is still on the end of the scarf. We've all looked high and low for the receipt but can't find it anywhere.
Mum's reluctant to take it back to M&S to let them take it off because she thinks they'll assume she stole it. Is there anyway we can remove it ourselves at home? If not, is there any way we can get M&S to remove it?

A magnet works perfectly, I used one out of an old hard drive.
It's the quickest and easiest way.
I think its impossible to remove it without one.
Some tags contain ink that damage the clothes if you fiddle with it.

Well, I'm not really sure, because you've lost the receipt it will be risky taking it back.
I was thinking if you still had the Marks and Spencer's bag, you could use that for proof and try to explain them that you didn't realise the tag was on and you couldn't find the receipt anywhere. You could also write a letter as well, or send them an Email about your complaint and they might send you apology or something.
They can't just get you in trouble for something that isn't your fault, it was that persons fault who didn't bother taking it off.
If you really stole it, the doors will beep.
Or did you buy the Scarf with a debit card?, you could try and get a bank statement and show that you brought the scarf on that date, I don't know if that will work though.

its happened to me. If its an ink cartridge security tag, you're pretty much screwed. I saw a tutorial online on how to remove it with a dremel tool and a circular blade tip, but it was risky. Additionally, it is run by magnets, so if you managed to magnetize it correctly, it could pull back the catch that keeps it closed. but i have no idea of the full principles.
going back to the store could be risky, as they would probably assume you stole it without a receipt. finding the receipt would be the best option, but you might be able to get away with it without a recepit.
and if you go back either way, talk to one of the women; not to be sexist, but i find they are usually more understanding.

You need a very strong magnet - place it next to the tag and it can be pulled apart - the same thing happened to me - they took one tag off at the check out but there was another hiding in a seam of the jacket. The alarm did go off when I left the shop but the security guard couldn't find the tag but my receipt checked out OK - very embarrassing.

Drill it off ?
A little suspicious as if the tag isn't removed the shops alarm goes off and your stopped. If it was a mistake, you would just show them your receipt, they would have said say sorry and then taken off the tag, (happened to my mum in Woolworths with a box of Lego )
However, as you don't have a receipt ( suspicous ) and they apparantly didn't remove the tag ( suspicous ) then your stuck with it, unless you want to try and perusuade M&S it was a mistake.
If your looking for ways of removing the tag (in store) in order to steal it then I'm not going to help!

Just take it back to the store and explain the situation. There's nothing else you CAN do except for cutting up the part of the scarf that has the ink cartridge, LOL

This happened to me too, i think it was something from Asda, it wasn't one that had ink in, i just bashed the small end with a little hammer til it broke and i could pull it apart, took me quite a while though!
