Minor Wound Care for horses?

Well there are no problems, I just want to know for the future. I volunteer at a barn and we have everything for first aid! Sometime around January or February I will be getting a horse of my own (I can't wait!). I was just wondering what horse owners think is the best product to use for minor open wounds and cuts. I have used wonder dust, corona (only for closed wounds though), ichthammol (for abscesses), and various other products. However I just used whatever product I was told to use. I am looking at them now, but I was wondering what you think is best for cuts and open wounds in general.

Also is there a first aid book for horses that you find very helpful?

Hi Emma been a while, Good question so many people think they have to run to the tack shop or call a vet in the case of a minor cut or scrape. My advice is treat the wound as if it was your own what

would you do ?A scrape or minor cut try some antibiotic salve and keep it clean and keep an eye on it for redness swelling or heat in the area other than that their boo boos are no worse then yours.Horses are big hardy animals and also their own worst enemy's.Cuts scrapes and other such things are just part of being a horse. They get em you fix em

Best of luck and e mail chrissy she would love to talk with you

Since her leg is not hot, and she's not freaking out, she should be okay. For the wound, put aloe vera ointment on it. I swear it will be unnoticeable in 3 days. This is what I use for all my horses' cuts and scrapes. For the swelling, what other people have suggested is right (about hosing it down). Keep a good watch on it to make sure it's still not hot. If it gets hot or the swelling doesn't start to go down by tomorrow or if the swelling in creases, see a vet. I know you said you can't have a vet come out, so I suggest going to one. Like one near a race track. Those are the best ones. I only use local vets for coggins and emergencies, cause they are at least 5 times more expensive than good race track vets. If you live any where near, I recommend the vet in Charlestown, WV. I go to him even though I live in Southern Central PA. (it's about a 3 hour drive, but so worth it) You'll have to make an appointment, but if he doesn't treat your horse for anything (just looks at her, and gives advice), he won't charge ANYTHING! And what he does charge (if he gives shots, or anything else) is way cheap, plus he's a much better vet than any of the local ones.

I like T-zone for wound care and Betadine for disinfecting. It easy and works well. A great book is the C manual for Pony Club. Even if your not in Pony Club, it has WONDERFUL information about horse care, stable care, vet care, etc. Also, a great site for vetrinary products is horse.com. Hope I helped :)

wonderdust will clot the blood if your horse is bleeding, works great! I found a fantastic link on wounds, and I couldn't say it all myself so I will just give you the link. It explains the different types of wounds, and how to treat them.

    EQUAIDE.

That's all the first aid you'll ever need. Nothing compares to it.

I use Blue Lotion to clean an open wound and Equaide to fix it.
