  • How do you put your hair in your helmet?

I have bangs, and my hair goes a few inches past my shoulders (I have layers)...and I'm wondering how other people put their hair under their helmet? I show hunters...and I want it so that my hair is covering half of my ear, but the back is pulled up into my helmet. Any suggestions? I've tried so many times...but I don't have a clue how people do it! Here is a picture of how I want to put my hair up:

This is the helmet I have...:

    http://www.tackroominc.com/international-ath-ssv-r...

thanks! Usually I just either put it in a bun with a hairnet over top or else I put it in a pony tail and flip it up then put on my helmet from back to front. But this year I want to do it differently, lol.

  • what camera would be good for this purpose? (please help!)?

I am very new to photography, but I absolutely enjoy it so much! I was wondering what would be a good camera/lens to use if I wanted to photograph horse jumping, and horses in general which move very fast. I've tried doing it on my digital camera, but all the pictures end up really blurry (on a sony cybershot)- so I need a camera with a VERY fast shutter speed (about 1/500 - 1/1000 sec). I also need to be able to zoom in from far away without the picture becoming blurry. I do not want to spend $3000 on cameras and lenses right now though-no more then $800 please. Thank you!

  • Zippers Or No zippers?

Okay so I have decided to go with the Ariat Challenge ll Field boot. However, I am having a hard time deciding weather or not I should get the ones with zippers. I've heard the zippers break (as in all boots) but they are easier to get off. I've heard that you get a custom fit every time if they do not have zippers, but they are harder to get off. What is your guy's opinion on zippers vs no zippers? I'm pretty sure I will go with the ones without zippers, but I would just like to get some more opinions before I spend my $300-$400 on them! Thank you.

Here are the boots I am talking about...

  • Do you ride in a helmet?

I do! Unless I am vaulting I always wear a helmet. When I don't ride with a helmet, I get very nervous then I just get off and borrow someones if I forgot mine or something! I've never shown western, but I know a lot of people at those shows do not wear helmets and it freaks me out haha. If I ever did show western I would most definetly wear a helmet- even if I am the only one. I would rather look out of place and not have a concussion than look like everyone else and put myself in danger. Another thing that makes me wear a helmet is barn rules for insurance, but also these facts:

    - Horseback riders are more at risk for serious accidents than motorcyclists.

    - Out of all the equestrians that reported brain damage/head injury, only 9% were wearing helmets!!

One time when I was cantering (for the first time a long time ago) I lost my stirrups, my helmet went over my eyes, I gripped with my knees, the horse was out of control, I dropped my reins and tipped forward while at full gallop, I flew over the 6ft high arena fence, and landed on "grass"...yea right! Under the grass was a huge rock and I landed on it, couldn't breath, or walk, or move. I hit my head pretty hard and I was a bit out of it and sorta dizzy. The only person there was my 11 year old friend. Scary! I'm okay now (yes I can breath, walk, ect no problems) but if I were not wearing a helmet at the time I had a pretty good chance at having permanent brain damage, or cracking my skull open- luckily it was my IRH helmet that took the damage, not me, my head was fine thanks to my helmet :) Lots of times I hear riders say things like "every time I fall my head doesn't touch the ground anyways", and trust me i've had plenty of those falls too, but there is a good chance you will finally hit your head pretty hard and it could do some damage. Please understand I am not judging you- it is a completly personal choice- I just would like to hear your opinion on helmets! Thank you.

    So...

Do you ride with a helmet (y or n)?

    Why? Why not?

Do you believe they can prevent injuries?

  • Ariat Heritage ll Tall Boots?

So, I've decided to get a nice pair of Ariat Heritage 2 tall boots with my christmas money this year. I have been asking around, and went to Horse Tack Review, and it seems that some people hate them, and others can't say enough about them. My friend told me (she has ariat heritage 2 tall zip) that hers are perfect. Other people said their zipper broke before they even got on their horse (i've heard many people say that). Is it true? I don't want them to break in the middle of a show day! I want something that will be comfertable to wear at a show while I am walking and running around for 8 hours daily. One girl told me to order your boots a 1/4 inch larger in the calf measurement and they will fit perfectly. Maybe all the other people who's zippers broke ordered them exactly the measurement of their calf so it was too tight? Should I just order what my measurement says (14.5in-calf)? Also...about the height- when I measure my leg height, how many inches do I need to add to allow them to drop down? Thank you!!

Here is the boot I am talking about:

  • Eskadron Recall In Europe?

Hi, I have heard from some people that Eskadrons have been recalled in Europe because they give a horse tendon (suspensory) damage. Has anyone heard anything about this? A vet around where I live made one of the big barns toss out all their eskadrons for this reason. Any information? Thank you.

P.S. - I would like to buy some jumping boots but I don't know the benefits/disadvantages? Fleece, velcro, leather, neoprone....ect. What brands do you guys have? I was thinking shedrow... :) thanks

  • How to become a working student for top equestrians?

Hi, I'm only 14 right now, but I was just looking @ ian millar's website saying that they are accepting applications to become a full time show jumping groom. I am not going to apply (obviously, haha) but I was wondering how to gain enough experience to work at that level? I want to make my resume look as professional as possible- what are some things that may gain attention of international competitors? When I am finished highschool, I want to train with the best riders/coaches, because I would like to go to the top of the sport. I am very determined to do so, but I do not know exactly how to GET there? I know where I want to end up- I would like to work at some of the bigger barns, become a barn manager or coach, and be a professional equestrian. Please do not tell me "oh yea right like your even going to make it" because that is not what I am looking for. I know if I am committed enough, if I work hard enough, and if I take the right opportunities and make the best of them, that I can and will get there. So, back to the question...

How do I get started on the path to working for top equestrians like (beezie madden, eric lamaze, McLain Ward, ect...)?

  • Things to make for horses, and horsepeople!?

I want to get gifts for my horsey friends, but I don't want to go to the tack store and buy stuff. Instead, this year I want to make it! What are some things that I could make? Please provide instructions, if you can. Also, what are some things I could make for my horses besides treats? I was thinking about making a saddle pad with candy cane stripes, or monnograming the saddle pads with their names or something funny like "grass eater" on the side. Maybe a bit warmer? any ideas? thanks!

  • Non slip options (saddle pads)?

Yesturday morning I was having my lesson on my horse, Sam, and my saddle kept slipping everywhere! It has never done that before- I know, my girth was too loose and that was why it was slipping though. I put it on loose when I tacked up, then I tightened it as hard as I could before I got on, and then I rode, and during my ride it kept slipping a lot. when I got off my girth was totally loose. So, nothing is a problem with that (I know that I have got to do it up tighter, as it has never done that before and I've ridden him at least 450 times since i've owned him). But- I have got a 3 year old paint horse named clue, and he doesn't really have high withers, they are very low and he is smooth and round. My saddle always slips on him. I have been looking at some "non slip pads" but I don't know which one I should get. The saddle doesn't slip on the saddle pad- the saddle and the saddle pad slip together. So I either need to swap saddle pads or put something under the saddle pad. What has worked best for you or for someone you know? Here are some of the things I've been looking at. My budget is as LOW as possible! Under $40 I will consider ;)

  • Could a barn owner refuse a cribber?

This did not happen to me, but I was just wondering this question. Could a barn owner refuse a cribber as a boarder? My instructor was very mad, because there is this one HORRIBLE cribber that use to be at the barn, and he chewed the entire stall, there were these 5 inch holes in the boards used to build the barn and it would've been very expensive to replace all of them. He also chewed half of this HUGE post used to hold up the upstairs viewing room, and he chewed all of the paddock boards. When he was turned out in the field he chewed all of the fences, he even pulled off about 3-5 rails on the top, and on the other ones he chewed them 3/4 way through. He had a cribbing collar that was on pretty tight and it didn't stop him. So, can a barn owner refuse a horse that cribs? It is a very annoying and destructive habbit. He also tought some of the other horses in the field with him to crib (mine and other people's) that have NEVER done it before, although I was very strict with my horses and they do not do it now (we moved barns). thanks :)

  • How to get my horse's mane & tail thicker?

I really want to get my horse's mane and tail thicker, but how? I would LOVE to be the one with the horse with the full, perfectly trimmed tail. I own a three year old paint gelding, and his tail is so thin you can pretty much see through it. Lots of amazing colours though. I have tried MTG, works wonders, but I'm looking for some other options that could help too. I've heard that tail bags are good, but if you don't wash your horse's tail first it could cause some serious damage. It's too cold, and I don't have access to a hose at all. What are some options that you have explored? I also want to condition his tail, it is kind of rough and perfectly straight. Should I braid it? (with a simple three strand braid, not like a french braid because it could break hairs). I also would like to get his mane fuller, MTG has worked amazingly well at doing this, but because my horse is kept outside, if it rains i'm worried about it washing out, and MTG isn't that cheap and I don't have a lot of it so i'm saving it for summer!

    http://www.ehow.com/how_5477946_make-homemade-tail...

do you guys think that would be a safe conditioner to put on his mane/tail? Should I braid his mane? thanks- any articles, photos, or stories and past experiences you guys have to share, that would be much appreciated. P.S. my horse DOES have a balenced diet, I know it's not from that. Also, him and my other horse have got the same feed, and my other horse has got the most thickest mane and tail EVER. thanks :)

  • trying to convince my mom to let me ride this pony? how?

Okay, so I put this ad up on a website to ride other peoples horse's on sundays. The whole point was to get more riding experience on a variety of horses. Fact is, I didn't ask my mom first, I thought she would go along with it . I own two horses (ages 3 & 23). Today, I got an email from a woman telling me that she would like it if I could ride her little fat fjord mare on the trails, and start her over fences. I went just now to go ask my mom if I could go ride her on sundays and she said no! She told me I have two of my own horses to ride. Thats true, but if I want to get better at riding I need to ride a variety of horses, not just two. How can i convince her that it's a GOOD thing to ride a variety of horses? Also, I offered to ride someone's horse, and they accepted and told me to call if I was interested. Now what am I supposed to do? Say "oh sorry I can't ride your horse"?I just put up the ad a few days ago! I'm totally stuck. I don't want to dissapoint this woman, but I want to convince my mom. help?

  • For fun, How much would you pay for my horse?

Just for fun...how much would you pay (if you had unlimited money..) for my gelding? Heres his info:

    - age 23, still has got TONNES of spirit!

    - Quarter horse cross

    - Always a winner in the hacks, and hunters

    - PERFECT form over fences!

    - Lots of show miles

    - has done cross country, dressage, jumpers, vaulting, trail riding, barrel racing, wp, but specializes in the hunters

    - Easy to ride, not spooky at ALL (even when there are drooling wolves beside him, or gunshots...)

    - lunges well

    - never coliced with me- even when he ate a bale and a half of alfalfa, bucket of molasses, and a bunch of grain, sweetfeed ect.

    - I have gone bareback in a halter on him loads of times! The other day I was on a three hour trail ride in the middle of nowhere with him bareback and on a halter...no problems.

    - doesn't even notice when a semi truck goes by

    - very responsive, he uses a dee ring french link

    - has jumped up to 3' in grids

    - perfect for beginner, or advanced

    - schooling 1st level movements

haha, I know this ISN'T safe for me, but just to show how cooperative he is...I have ridden him bareback in a halter, backwards, with my eyes closed over a cross pole...lol. I did that about a year ago with my friends (it's fun!). He has got great conformation, can be ridden by anyone.

    - autochanges when he's jumping, flyingchanges when he's not

    - UTD on worming, vaccinations, ect

    - You can sit under his stomatch and he won't do anything (i've done it before..haha. again...not safe just in case..)

    - Good with other horses, not snorty

    - my six year old sister has ridden him with it being her first time on a horse, he just walked around quietly haha

    - VERY easy keeper over the winter!

Soo...how much would you pay for this horse?

Here are some pictures of him:

    http://s514.photobucket.com/albums/t350/horses1092...

If I had a camera cord for my video camera I would upload & make a video..but I dont :( Otherwise I have videos of every single horse show I've been to. sorry- no conformation shots, I just wanted to do this for fun :)

  • What am I supposed to do during fall/winter?

I am trying to think of what I can do in the rain/snow...but I can't think of anything? I am training my 3 year old gelding to become a fancy show hunter, but how can I do that when the footing is horrible? I pasture board in a field, and I take lessons up the road. Walking there takes about 30 minutes. Boarding at the facility is way out of the question- $600/month, plus lessons, farrier, ect and I have got two horses, which would equal it up to about $1500/month! I do not own a horse trailer, and none of my friends do either. Right now I can only ride two days a week (sat+sun) because it gets dark at like 4:30 and my mom gets off work @ 6pm- she works mon-fri. (I have to walk my horses up the road for 30 minutes to get to the barn/arena/instructor). The barn I am riding at leases their ring out for $100/month and you can ride unlimited in it (this is for non boarders). This is what I will be doing in the summer, I will lease it and ride both my horses 5-7days a week, because I will not have to walk in the dark as it will get dark at like 10:30pm! But my question is...how can I ride in the winter? Right now it's not so bad (except my horse is lame)...just a lot of rain and I'm okay to walk in the rain, but what about snow? We get like 3ft of snow at one time...? How can I prepare my horses for show season in that? lol. I was hoping to really get my gelding going for next year so I can show him in the local hack classes. I also would like to do the winter show in febuary. What would you do in my situation? I want to improve my young horse, and myself but...? what do you guys do in the winter? Would you guys trudge through 3ft of snow for 45minutes to get to a riding arena?? thanks
