Things to make for horses, and horsepeople!?

I want to get gifts for my horsey friends, but I don't want to go to the tack store and buy stuff. Instead, this year I want to make it! What are some things that I could make? Please provide instructions, if you can. Also, what are some things I could make for my horses besides treats? I was thinking about making a saddle pad with candy cane stripes, or monnograming the saddle pads with their names or something funny like "grass eater" on the side. Maybe a bit warmer? any ideas? thanks!

I know you said 'besides' treats...but they are fool-proof and always a winner. There are easy treats to make for the horses out of oats, honey and peanut butter (a quick google search will give you dozens of recipes). I use to make a bunch, then put them in horse-themed stockings. I then hung them on/in the tack rooms or stalls for the owner's to give their horses as they saw fit.

If your budget is allowing for more room to play with (it get's expensive fast you know?)...then you could go with:

-Frames (these can be customized at various stores) with a picture of the horse/rider already in it. Everyone loves a picture of their four-legged bud!

-Anything that makes life riding easier for the human, these things don't need to be purchased at tack stores. Customized water bottles/canteens/thermoses. They also sell cooling/warming bands to wear around your hands or neck that really make riding more comfortable if you do most of it outdoors.

    - I like the monogrammed saddle pad idea but think it may be a bit expensive and perhaps inappropriate- meaning not everyone has the same taste or comfort- some may prefer a certain brand/size for their saddle pads....but if you know the person well and have the $, then I suggest you just do a classy embroidery with the person (or horse's) initials. Having worked many years at a shop that did Embroidery i can tell you it won't come cheap- if you plan on doing it yourself....it's very difficult.

    ....good luck!

Before I even read your question, I was like "Bit warmer!" Seems like you already had that idea:)

I made a bit warmer for myself, and I love it. It stays warm for about a half hour. Warms up the bit pretty quick, and then you can put the warmer in your pocket to keep your hands warm.

I made mine out or regular fabric, filled it with rice (you can use beans also) and then put a cute button on it to use as the clasp. I made mine about 5" by 5" (depending on your bit shape and width) Pop it in your microwave for 1 min. and your ready to go!

  • I am going to be doing this for me, lol!

    Make horse hair key chains!

Get think clippings of horses manes and tails. When I trimmed my mares mane I got 15 or 20 6" pieces. put them in small bundles and tightly tape one end. Then when you get home open the tape and put hot glue where the tape was, lay a thin leather string through also. You can then slide a clip on one end and put beads, tie on feathers(thats what I am doing) or what ever you want on it!

For horse friends you can make little stuffed horse ornaments! All you need is batting, some basic fabric and yarn for the mane and tail!

If your good at carving, you could carve your friends horses names into some wood or some thing. Or paint the names, what ever.

That's all I can really think of for now... sorry. =/

This is what I made my sister for Christmas: http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp228/Meagk78/P...

    http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp228/Meagk78/P...

    http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp228/Meagk78/J...

They are her and her Arab, Jasmine.

I'm going to print them off at the store so they're big, and frame them. =]

    You could do something similar........
