California residents: is this state money?

I just got a few hundred dollars direct deposited into my bank acct, and no idea why (not that I'm complaining!)

The summary says:

California State DIRECT PAY

Is this from taxes? because I owed last year so idk why they would be paying me?

    I would agree, contact your bank and have them do a trace on the transaction to find out what it's for.

    I would go to the bank and inquire; unless the State has your banking info, there may be something "funny" going on
