Oh no, it's going to cost extra money to keep up with the rest of the world?
We spend so little on education anyway, that I'm willing to double the education budget if that's what it takes. Our children are far uneducated compared to the rest of the industrialized world, and if we don't change that, we're screwed.
We'll continue to lose labor jobs overseas. The only way to deal with that is to have skilled intelligent workers. That won't happen unless we get a better education system. 3 months off only facilitates children forgetting what they learned.
If nothing else, it's far better than "no child left behind".

No disrespect, but SCREW what the kids think... 'cuz most the time, they're not even thinkin' with their dipsticks, Jimmuh.
Maybe they'd LEARN something.
Maybe they'd get extra help.
Maybe teen pregnancies would go down... nahhhh.
But the PARENTS should be ecstatic. Those hours are much better for families. And that means more teachers.
Perfect opportunity for retired and semi-retired, and LAID-OFF teacers to share their knowledge AND earn a paycheck so they can PAY TAXES and SPEND MONEY...
Sounds better and better all the time.
Heck, the kids might even like it.
But TOO BAD if they don't.
The sooner that they learn that the world doesn't just fall into their laps, the better.

My parents sent me to extra classes after my regular school hours. As a result I speak 3 languages and have my own business and I am doing very well in this economy. I remember my classmates who would huddle in the house of one of their friends smoking grass or trying alchohol, while I attended school. I am very proud of my parents and believe children have too many idle hours. Obama has reached the highest level in our country being our commander in chief, if we want to give our kids the best fighting chance, educate while thier minds are being formed. I agree with Obama 100%. Plus not only can children use the extra time to learn about a language etc, but perhaps it can be music classes or art and maybe it would encourage more children NOT to drop out of school. You shouldnt be provoking kids NOT to want to learn. It doesnt make YOU look all that bright.

I think this is going to be the norm ~utilize the schools as they are going
fallow for three months a year. Other countries have been doing this
and hey have great results...Make sure the classrooms are a/c in the
hot months for the comfort of the students and the teachers.

Its a great idea. Kids left at home alone, dont forget we live in a society where two parents have to work and so our kids are home alone. I think the crime rate would go down as more children will be motivated to make something out of themselves. I know I would feel alot better with my kids in school while I am driving home from work. I do not know alot of kids that go home and start homework and stay that way till mom and dad gets home. Maybe kids wont hang out at malls for hours with lack of things to do. Go Obama its a great plan, I personally endorse it.

lol americans are the only ones with such a short school year anyways. no wonder you're all spoiled and stupid. in japan they get a week off every couple of months, no big 3 month chunk in the middle of the year.
i say do it. it would get them more prepared for the real world, when they only get 2 weeks of vacay with their new job.

Why shouldn't they have to go to school year around? Gets them used to it. How many jobs, other than teachers, give you the summer off?
Of course the kids won't like it, tough, that's the way life is, and the sooner they learn that, the better off they will be.

I think it is great for kids who find nothing to do all summer and get off early while their parents are still working, find themselves getting into trouble from boredom. The asian culture already do this as well as alot of europeans. Their children attend english school and often will attend another school for a few hours. When we are children is the time to try to introduce as much education as you can. It is very smart of Obama.
