What is the condition of the dead?

Is there some part of man that lives on when the body dies?
Ezek. 18:4; Isa. 53:12 (Compare Matthew 26:38.)
Are the dead in any way able to help or to harm the living?

What is the origin of Christendom’s belief in an immaterial, immortal soul?
“The Christian concept of a spiritual soul created by God and infused into the body at conception to make man a living whole is the fruit of a long development in Christian philosophy. Only with Origen [died c. 254 C.E.] in the East and St. Augustine [died 430 C.E.] in the West was the soul established as a spiritual substance and a philosophical concept formed of its nature. . . . His [Augustine’s] doctrine . . . owed much (including some shortcomings) to Neoplatonism.”—New Catholic Encyclopedia (1967), Vol. XIII, pp. 452, 454.
“The concept of immortality is a product of Greek thinking, whereas the hope of a resurrection belongs to Jewish thought. . . . Following Alexander’s conquests Judaism gradually absorbed Greek concepts.”—Dictionnaire Encyclopédique de la Bible (Valence, France; 1935), edited by Alexandre Westphal, Vol. 2, p. 557.
“Immortality of the soul is a Greek notion formed in ancient mystery cults and elaborated by the philosopher Plato.”—Presbyterian Life, May 1, 1970, p. 35.
“Do we believe that there is such a thing as death? . . . Is it not the separation of soul and body? And to be dead is the completion of this; when the soul exists in herself, and is released from the body and the body is released from the soul, what is this but death? . . . And does the soul admit of death? No. Then the soul is immortal? Yes.”—Plato’s “Phaedo,” Secs. 64, 105, as published in Great Books of the Western World (1952), edited by R. M. Hutchins, Vol. 7, pp. 223, 245, 246.
“The problem of immortality, we have seen, engaged the serious attention of the Babylonian theologians. . . . Neither the people nor the leaders of religious thought ever faced the possibility of the total annihilation of what once was called into existence. Death was a passage to another kind of life.”—The Religion of Babylonia and Assyria (Boston, 1898), M. Jastrow, Jr., p. 556.

Many very diverse cultures all say just about the same thing: that there is a life beyond this one.
Also, the thought that this world is all there is -- makes everything we do here utterly pointless and empty. Scream and shout as much as anybody may want, I'm just not going there. The world of thousands of years affirms a life after death, and a few folks today are dubious? That's not nearly enough to sway me.

There is a lot of life left after a death. Just not for whatever it was that died. Game Over for them. The rest of us go on living though.

I'm not even convinced there's much of a Life, before Death!

I am an agnostic, and quite comfortable living on the fence enjoying my life in the present without prejudice one way or the other. I do not fear death or hell (if it exists).
But, just to keep both teams happy (theists/atheists) I'll tell you what. When I'm just about to clock out permanently I will have one last five knuckle shuffle and 'spill my seed in the dirt' for the atheists.
Then with a serene smile on my face I will welcome Jesus into my heart and rapidly diminishing life. Ain't life as an agnostic just grand! :D

I hope so! I'd hate to think that after you died that there would be nothing.
And as for the first commenter, "death" is just a word. Like knowing how the world was created, no one else knows for sure what is to come after death.

for those people saying nothing will happen and thats the end of it ;what a stupid answer. if that was true why would we not just kill each other and just do suicide after we had all the fun?
The truth is yes there is life after death. there is no proof to disprove that and no proof to prove that so i go with my heart.

The answer to that is clearly given in the Bible Ecclesiastes ch9 v 5,6 says "For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun."
verse 10 of that same chapter says "All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She′ol, the place to which you are going"
So that clearly shows that when you are dead you are not conscious of anything.
However that is not the end for those who have died! Jesus spoke of a resurrection from the dead John ch5 v 28 gives Jesus' words "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out"
So all those who have died will be resurrected but when will this happen?
When Jesus was on Earth his friend Lazarus died and Jesus went to bring him back from the dead. The account in the book of John not only shows what Jesus said about death but helps us see when this resurrection will take place.The account is in John ch11-"said to them: “Laz′a‧rus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.”  Therefore the disciples said to him: “Lord, if he has gone to rest, he will get well.” Jesus had spoken, however, about his death. But they imagined he was speaking about taking rest in sleep. At that time, therefore, Jesus said to them outspokenly: “Laz′a‧rus has died" "Martha therefore said to Jesus: “Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died. And yet at present I know that as many things as you ask God for, God will give you.” Jesus said to her: “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.”  Jesus said to her: “I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life;
So there is hope for those who have died. I personally find it a great comfort to know that we do not go to a place of fiery torment nor are we floating around aimlessly in limbo.
The word She'ol is a Hebrew word meaning "the grave"
