Well first of all hinduism is only popular because of its dominance in a extremely populated state, namely india.

Christianity has been the religion of the western worlds great empires and it logically spread all over to the places they conquered. The americas thanks to spain, france, and the english. Western Africa because of early british colonies.

Islam right now is the fastest growing religion, as it offers direct methods to reach heaven, which is something Christianity doesnt promise. The fervancy of this religion has spread eastward, which is generally not as populated or economically prosperous. You see Islam in east africa, the middle east, parts of India, southeast asia, Indonesia, and parts of America now.

Edit: Christinity is very adapatable. It took pagan practices and rituals (christmas) and mixed them with emotionally consoling beliefs such as god loves you, everything has a reason, you will live forever... etc. In our modern era, its adapting to our culture by lightening its rules when they realize the rules wont be tolerated. Unfortunately just like in the andromeda strain, it cant adopt to change its core belief. When people stop believing in gods... the religion will die. No matter how adaptable

It's not really popular so much as what's left. Christians are mostly descendants of people converted by force. Europeans converted or killed anyone not a Christian for millenia. This is just a fact.

Christianity has had time to strengthen its defenses and increase its population through breeding.

As far as popularity, Islam holds that title. It is the fastest growing religion on Earth. And as your data shows, is less than 1 billion members shy of Christianity. Also take into account that Christians had 6 centuries on Islam and frankly, more Muslims have died by a Christian sword than the reverse.

It's not the most popular so much as most numerous. Given time, Islam will catch up.

Jesus is God and the Bible contains the truth.

It would be difficult to explain everything in a short answer.

I would suggest you visit the below website. You will get all the answers, for the below questions and many more.

    1) Did Jesus really exist?

    2) Is Jesus God?

3)Why should I believe that the Bible is accurate, or the word of God?

    4) What is the Holy Trinity?

5)What is so special about Jesus? Why cant I just view him as an ordinary man or a teacher or a prophet? Why should I see him as God?

Survival of the Fittest in Religion

Some religions have become extinct and are no longer widely practised (eg. Paganism, Roman Gods, Egytian Gods) and we only have thier fosilised remains (statues of their Gods) whereas others have survived the test of time (eg. Christianity, Buddism, Taoism). Some new monsters have appearred (eg. Church of Scientology, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints) and some have specied off into different species and sub species (eg. Islamists, Christianity, Catholicism, Seven Day Adventists, Baptists, Jehovah Witness') by having more DNA added to their genomes (eg the addition of the New Testament to the old testament). Some religions have adapted to their environments (eg. Church of England, Catholicism in the Vatican City). Reproduction through preaching helps religious populations to grow - some religions have been more active in the reproduction front than others. Some mutations are extremely dangerous (eg. secular movements, cults, extremist islamic movements) making their spread more limited. Some adaptions allow some religions to adapt to the current environment (eg. changes to rules regarding divorce, pre-marital sex, wearing skimpy clothing, shopping on Sunday, etc). It is Christianity's adaptability which has made it one of the most popular and flourishing religions today. :)

People tend to follow the crowd, and tend to subscribe to something that is easy, simple and convenient.

Christianity encourages people not to think too much. Whereas religions like Taoism, Hinduism and Buddhism require a lot of reflection and thinking into the different concepts.

    Popular doesn't mean correct too.

This is a fulfilment of the mission of the Apostles- to spread the Gospel of Christ to all nations as it is being written in the book of Matthew Chapter 28:19 and it states:

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Mt. 28:19)

The believers of Christ continues to grow as time goes by. The real Church that Christ himself founded is the Roman Catholic Church.

If you will read its history, you will surely know and prove to yourself that this is the one, true Church of the Lord that he founded upon Saint Peter.

The Church after the death of the Apostles continues to grow in number and the Church during those times is still the Church that we see today. It was just named Holy Catholic Apostolic Roman Church in order for man to distinguish the true Church.

Roman Catholics around the world are now over 1 billion people.

One faith, One Lord, One Church.

The reason of its popularity is because of its commitment for a better, and a peaceful world through its teachings which are essential to the world's development and salvation of man.

Alex's answer is very true. I only want to add that it has retained popularity because it is very easy and as Americans, we all want easy. All you have to do is ask for forgiveness on Sunday morning in church and your slate is wiped clean. The Christian bible says Jesus suffered for your sins so you wouldn't have to, so as long as you believe that and ask for forgiveness, it'll be okay.

So having a large number of followers means that it's absolutely true? Amazing logic.

There are over a billion followers of Islam; why don't you follow that religion?

    Europeans.

Because Spain, France, Britian and Italy controlled most of the world 400-1000 years ago. And if you weren't a Christian, they killed you.
