Lyrics - Music today is much more liberal than in the 1970s. For example, in the 1970s, the lyrics might have had similar themes to today's music (politics, sex, drugs), but today's music is more vulgar than the music of the 1970s. More cussing, more outward disrespect to the government and others, etc.

Style - With the innovation of technology, the different styles of music have evolved. For example, the "techno" genre didn't really exist in the 1970s, but it does now.

Format / Distribution - In the 1970s, most people listened to music either on the radio or on a record. While the radio is still popular, people today can buy CDs or mp3s, and the internet has greatly improved the ease of distribution (but also the problem of unlicensed distribution).

Prominence of Women in Mainstream Music - In the 1970s, there were fewer opportunities for female performers than in today's music climate.
