How to deal with employers in Japan?
Say a Japanese citizen was abroad several years working and living in another country on expired documents, will Japanese employers care or need to know that person was in that situation? (anticipating questions like, "Why were you able to work in xxxx, were you married? Do you have permanent residency card? Do you have dual citizenship?")

I don't believe so.
I have been living in Japan for almost 19 years and my experience tells me that they Japanese employers would not ask such details on previous Visa Status.
The main reason why is that they just don't know what are the requirements to live and/or work in a foreign country.
It is also not necessary and if the working experience is related to their requirements, there would be no need to ask.
The only worry would be if such individual has been banned from returning to the mentioned country. That is just in case that the job would require him/her for traveling abroad.
I guess that such private questions will do come but in a very casual way when socializing with other employees. Then, there is no need for an a straight answer.
Good luck.
